Songs: Ohia
Songs: Ohia is one man -- Jason Molina -- a tenor guitar-wielding songwriter from the shores of Lake Erie. Critics often compare Songs: Ohia to Palace/Will Oldham, and while sonically the comparison is valid, Molina's ardent, soul-searching lyrics are more aptly compared to Neil Young or Leonard Cohen. Molina was born in Lorain, OH. Growing up on a heavy dosage of Black Sabbath, Molina began his musical career playing bass in heavy metal bands around Cleveland. Always a songwriter, Molina eventually decided to perform and record solo with he...[more]

SOUND SAVER. Songs: Ohia will break your heart if you let them (and sometimes even if you don't). The songs here are full of failing relationship melancholy. Jason Molina's lyrics and voice cut right to the chase without being insincere or sappy. He is accompanied by haunting and fluid guitar, bass, and drum arrangements. Edith Frost joins him on "Captain Badass" to stab your heart further. Comparisons to Will Oldham's work (in various Palace incarnations) are inescapable, but this music stands on its own. With the wailing lap steel of the album opener "Farewell Transmission," Jason Molina & Company usher in a new day, playing the sort of rock that your cool uncle liked back in the '70s. Landing somewhere on the radar sonically between Bob Dylan's "Desire" and Bob Seger's "Beautiful Loser," though thematically in-line with Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man," "The Magnolia Electric Co." lies at the crossroads of working class rock, white soul, swamp rock, and outlaw country. Opening with an epic and ending with a little spartan ode, "The Lioness" is songwriter Jason Molina's fourth and most dynamic and impassioned full-length album to date. Recorded at Chem19 Studio in Glasgow, Scotland, with his Glaswegian friends Aidan Moffat and David Gow of Arab Strap, and Ali Roberts of Appendix Out, as well as with Songs: Ohia veterans Geof Comings and Jonathan Cargill, it is, on its exterior, a much darker affair than each of its predecessors. VINYL FORMAT - Never has a Songs: Ohia album's process been so integral to its overall feel as is the case with DIDN'T IT RAIN, the band's sixth proper full-length. The album, like the working class South Philadelphia neighborhood in which it was birthed, has a real used goods kinda feel to it. After the densely textured, almost suffocating feel of Ghost Tropic, Didn't It Rain is like a blast of arctic wind. Recorded live, the album has a much looser, informal feel than its predecessor. This jam-session quality is also fostered by the addition of Jim Krewson and Jennie Benford from the neo-bluegrass band Jim & Jennie & the Pinetops, lending mandolin and close harmonies to the sparse, minor-key acoustic strumming of Jason Molina. But don't come expecting some sort of hootenanny [ read more ]
