Opening with an epic and ending with a little spartan ode, "The Lioness" is songwriter Jason Molina's fourth and most dynamic and impassioned full-length album to date. Recorded at Chem19 Studio in Glasgow, Scotland, with his Glaswegian friends Aidan Moffat and David Gow of Arab Strap, and Ali Roberts of Appendix Out, as well as with Songs: Ohia veterans Geof Comings and Jonathan Cargill, it is, on its exterior, a much darker affair than each of its predecessors. Perhaps it was the Scottish weather and company that gave it such a feel, for at the core of "The Lioness," there is a warmth and tenderness unmatched on previous Songs: Ohia recordings. Indeed, this is a dark and sultry record, but not a melancholy one. While the last Songs: Ohia album "AXXESS & ACE" was an album that revealed many of the painful truths about love through its loss, this is an album about the beauty of love as seen from its rich foundational and experiential stages.

I must confess that "The Lioness" was the first Songs:ohia album I heard. It blew me away, thought and when I now listen to his previous records "Impala" and "Axxess and Ace", I must say that he made lots of progress. Not that he completely changed his style or themes or way of playing. No, it is just the songs that are so much better, especially the six first ones. All of a sudden, James Molina has turned from a promising young artist into a real artist. Whereas the previous releases were a bit unstable, this new album is absolutely mature. The songs on this record are all about popular music's great theme : LOVE, its pleasures and its problemes. Apart from better songs -melodies, that is- Molina has found the right tone in his lyrics : basic but still so very poetic. I'm looking forward to James Molina's following output already.
