Sonic Mook Experiment

Since its 1997 inception, the Sonic Mook club in London has moved its location around from space to space, from underground warehouses to the old 333 club, the King's Cross section, and now has a home in London's inner-city area. It has become legendary, as promoter Sean McLusky and a collective of like-minded DJ's have successfully delivered an antidote to the formulaic clubbing experience with their 'anything goes' attitude. As a result, they stimulated the buzz around many now-prevalent acts, including some of the ones featured here.

Primal Scream, Suicide, Squarepusher, ARE Weapons, Christian Vogel, King Biscuit Time (a Beta Band offshoot), Leftfield, Death In Vegas, Asian Dub Foundation, Stereolab vs. Hairy Butter, Add N to X, Guy Called Gerald and others make up a surprising array of music, from old-school mainstream house to Manchester beats, quirky game music, fatty breaks, and 'future rock and roll.' All of these tracks are quite rare, having only appeared on out-of-print vinyl (with the exception of the crazy Stereolab/Hairy Butter track, pulled from the Lo Recordings catalog), with some of the mixes appearing here for the first time. About half the tracks are remixed, by the likes of Adrian Sherwood, Andrew Weatherall, Wagon Christ, David Holmes, Pulp, DJ Godfather and more.
