Corporate Ghost: The Videos 1992-2002 (DVD)
Insound Staff Pick - 2008! Corporate Ghost - The Videos: 1990-2002 marks both Sonic Youth's first DVD release and the first collection of the group's groundbreaking Geffen/DGC-era videos. Also includes unreleased bonuses, hours of commentary, a Spike Jonze montage, and more Sonic love. The 23 videos span all seven of Sonic Youth's major label albums, as well as their cover of "Superstar" from 1994's Carpenters tribute album If I Were A Carpenter. Included are the videos for all 11 Goo tracks; three from Dirty (1992) ("100%," "Sugar Kane," and "Youth Against Fascism"); one from Experimental Jet Set, Trash And No Star (1994) ("Bull In The Heather"); two from Washing Machine ("Little Trouble Girl" and "The Diamond Sea"); two from A Thousand Leaves (1998) ("Sunday" and "Hoarfrost"); one from NYC Ghosts & Flowers (2000) ("Nevermind (What Was It Anyway)"); and two from Murray Street ("The Empty Page" and "Disconnection Notice").
Also included is a rare solo video from band member Thurston Moore's 1995 solo album Psychic Hearts (for "Ono Soul") and three previously unreleased clips: the original cut of "Disappearer" from Oscar-nominated director Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven) and the crème de la crème of the 1992 MTV 120 Minutes/Sonic Youth Homemade Video contest.
Known for their history of working with young directors who then move on to great acclaim, "Corporate Ghost" features over three hours of commentary and interviews from the members of Sonic Youth as well as directors including (among others): Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation), Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven), Tamra Davis (CB4, Billy Madison), and Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo). In addition, there are new interviews with some actors from the videos including Jason Lee (Almost Famous, Chasing Amy) discussing his first on-screen role in the Sonic Youth video for "100%," and Kathleen Hanna speaking of her role in "Bull In The Heather." Spike Jonze provides a narrated photomontage of his long friendship with the band, as well as contributions to a few of the band's videos ("100%," "The Diamond Sea"). Other bonus material includes 19 minutes of bonus interviews, a fan-created short film called "My Sonic Room," plus hidden bonus features. All region DVD.
