Spoon

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Hailing from Austin, TX, Spoon originated in 1994 as a collaboration between Britt Daniel (vocals/guitar) and Jim Eno (drums) and a rotating cast of supporting players. Their hybrid of indie and punk resulted in a number of Sonic Youth and Pixies comparisons after their 1996 debut album, Telephono. Spoon toured with the likes of Pavement, Guided by Voices, Silkworm, and Archers of Loaf before their Soft Effects EP was released in 1997. Spoon make some of the catchiest, most confident rock 'n' roll of any group around. Their fifth full-length is nothing short of a dizzying, soulful masterpiece, easily the most expansive work in their career. Gimme Fiction is a sprawling, exhilarating, filler-free album of keenly focused artistic vision and ambition.

With a history of stellar records, Spoon has topped themselves with Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, a thrilling album recorded throughout 2006 in Austin by the band and Mike McCarthy (except "The Underdog", recorded in Los Angeles with Jon Brion). Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga starts with "Don't Make Me a Target", a song that builds on Spoon's familiar minimal rhythmic piano/guitar vamp popularized on earlier hits like "Small Stakes" or "The Way We Get By". The album quickly moves into uncharted territory with the atmosphe   [ read more ]

The record you've been awaiting since 2001's critically acclaimed "Girls Can Tell," and Britt Daniel, Jim Eno, and the rest of the band firmly deliver. Recorded in Eno's Austin studio throughout the winter and spring of 2002, "Kill the Moonlight" is a staggering achievement, with stylistic range and emotional depth far beyond that of prior Spoon works. A mind blowing, life-affirming rock & roll record that is a match for any classic you care to name.

"With A Series of Sneaks, Spoon became one of the unsung heroes of the guitar-driven post-punk tradition inhabited by bands such as Wire, Gang of Four, Husker Dό, and the Pixies. These were the guitar wizards who could package a variety of taut, terse, and inventive guitar sounds and unpredictable melodies into short, tight bursts one could still consider pop songs. Lead singer and guitarist Britt Daniel acts as the overachieving honors student of this tradition, flushing the spaces in between with an expan   [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. "Someone Something," the first single from Spoon's full-length "Kill The Moonlight," is a great slice of the intelligent rock for which Spoon has become famous. With a great piano intro, a killer hook -- and the cocky delivery that puts Britt Daniel at the top of the current rock heap -- "Someone Something" will become one of those famed Spoon singles that every fan's gotta have. The b-sides, "Is This the Last Time?" and "In The Right Place The Right Time," showcase a more introspective side o   [ read more ]

Out of print for nearly five years, "Telephono" and "Soft Effects" are presented here re-mastered in one specially priced deluxe package with an added video and beautifully restored artwork. With amped-up acoustic guitars, jumpy song structures, and a punk attitude, "Telephono" (1996) was the shot across the bow from Austin's fledgling rock heroes. The follow-up, "Soft Effects" (1997), features five of Spoon's strongest songs and marks a leap forward in the band's repertoire, signaling the great things to c   [ read more ]
