ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Sharing a fondness for sophisticated soul and pop artists (the Smiths, New Order, Marvin Gaye, et al.), Stars were formed by Torquil Campbell and Chris Seligman in New York. Along with friends Evan Cranley (also of Big Rude Jake) and Amy Millan (who contributed to the soundtrack for the film {#Drowning Mona}), the band relocated to Montreal. Their debut full-length, Nightsongs, was released in early 2001, followed by an EP, The Comeback, later that year. Besides playing with Stars, Campbell has appeared in films, plays, and televisi...[more]

By all accounts, the process of creating Set Yourself On Fire, Stars' third full-length album for Arts & Crafts, home to their dear friends and sometime collaborators and bandmates Broken Social Scene -- played like scenes from The Shining. During one of the coldest winters on record, the soft revolutionaries set up shop in a cabin offered to them by an odd man they'd met in a local pub, a chap named Alan Nicholls. While the snow fell outside, Stars nestled in their cocoon, drank rivers of booze, sm   [ read more ]

When an album starts off with each member of the band announcing, "I am ____, and this is my heart," you should probably know straight off what you're getting into. Stars have come to rock the master of your cardiovascular system, and if you're not prepared to accommodate a healthy serving of lyrical earnestness, you should probably just Remove All from your Winamp and go play some street hockey, you manly man you. Stars is yet another Montreal act keeping the indie pop dream alive in '03. Less all over th   [ read more ]

Fourteen tracks of pure heaven. Nightsongs, the long-awaited debut album from Stars, contains beautiful beats, heartfelt lyrics, and enough injections of Morrissey, Marr, Derrick May, Björk, The Blue Nile, New Order, Frazier Chorus, Style Council, Electronic, Marvin Gaye, The Chimes, and De La Soul to move St. Etienne and all the angels up in heaven to tears. Tears of joy. Salty tears the likes of which they've never wept before. A million dancehall dreams will be built around these words and rhythms   [ read more ]

Le Grand Magistery is proud to announce the fantastic new band, Stars -- the new 'NSYNC for Momus lovers, or Belle & Sebastian with beats and even breathier vocals. Stars is a pop band that strives to create a musical dreamworld based on one simple manifesto: "Luxe, Calme et Volupte? (Light, Calm and Voluptuous)." This manifesto is inspired by artists of the sensual realm: The Auters, Black Box Recorder, Matisse, Al Green, New Order, The Pet Shop Boys, Sargent, Bjork, Saint Etienne, Massive Attack, and The    [ read more ]

Five songs! Their best material yet. Stars mainman Torquil Campbell is ticked off. He thinks "Nightsongs" was a very appealing mishmash that everyone loved, but this EP is a masterpiece and maybe you won't get it! And he should know! Glossy, gland-stimulating, guitar-driven electro-pop genius from Torquil and Co.
