Combining an inclination for melodic '60s pop with an art rock aesthetic borrowed from Krautrock bands like Faust and Neu!, Stereolab were one of the most influential alternative bands of the '90s. Led by Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier, Stereolab either legitimized forms of music that were on the fringe of rock, or brought attention to strands of pop music -- bossa nova, lounge-pop, movie soundtracks -- that were traditionally banished from the rock lineage. Stereolab was poised for a breakthrough release with Emperor Tomato Ketchup, their fourth full-length album. Not only was their influence becoming apparent throughout alternative rock, but Mars Audiac Quintet and Music for the Amorphous Body Center indicated they were moving closer to distinct pop melodies. The group certainly hasn't backed away from pop melodies on Emperor Tomato Ketchup, but just as their hooks are becoming catchier, they bring in more avant-garde and experimental influence   [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Insound Staff Pick - 2008! Their eleventh album is a collection of purposefully short, dense, fast pop songs brimming with Motown-like drums, baroque-pop brass and string arrangements, and mellifluous vocal performances. It is, nonetheless, classic Stereolab; like all their best work, a perfect equipoise between an implausibly cool past and a shamelessly exotic future.

VINYL FORMAT. For nearly a decade, Stereolab have produced one of music's most acclaimed bodies of work and built one of modern pop's most zealous, forward-thinking fanbases. On their new album, "Margerine Eclipse," Stereolab refines and expands their subversive musical explorations, sculpting a hypnotic musical apparition that mixes modern beats and rhythms with a cool, swinging, '60s, go-go ambience. Jangle, groove, rhythm, melody, and sweet, dreamy singing combine to create a distinct, sometimes soothin   [ read more ]
