2003, Absolutely Kosher
The Dead Science is a drone-jazz trio under the influence of pop that isn't afraid of experimentation. Composed of contrabassist, Jherek Bischoff who is as deft with his bow as he is with his fingers (and I wouldn't be surprised if he is responsible for the violin that eases into the mold every now and then), drummer Korum Bischoff, the backbone of the band who brings primitive rhythms to an otherwise jazzy sound and Sam Mickens who sings while plucking the guitar. Sam's voice is of the Thom Yorke/Jeff Buckley/Morrissey vain and when present, it demands your attention and initially sounds strangely out of place. It took several listens for it all to meld into a cohesive unit. Yet it all fits nicely together, the wailing vocals, thumb thumping bass and lazily rolling drums, as one odd but alluring body of music.
