2010, Self-Released
North Highlands was born on a lazy summer afternoon in Brooklyn, when Brenda Malvini tracked down some musician friends she had met during her formative college days to jam. The session was going well, but took a climatic turn after they tried out one of Brenda's songs. A sweaty, introspective silence followed as they stared into each other's eyes (souls?). They wanted to play it over and over again. The song would turn into "Collar Bones," and the kids with the guitars would become North Highlands. The rest of North Highlands helped color Brenda's sketches into fully-formed compositions: Mike's distinct, discordant guitar. Jasper's schizophrenic drumming - equal parts jazz, psychedelic and African. Andy's melodic bass - driving songs forward at 88 MPH. Daniel's warm touch, sweetening everything with violin, mandolin and guitar. After a few months together, these old friends figured they knew what love was and decided to take the plunge, recording the Sugar Lips EP at Halsey Street Studio with James Clark. "Ladies represent! The female-fronted North Highlands play charming, borderline-sassy psych-pop that Wild Things soundtrack-era Karen O and Elephant Six fans will eat right up, they'll love it so." - Rawk Blog (CMJ 2009: 10 Bands that Killed It)
