Summer Hymns concoct more ethereal indie pop/rock with art rock, psychedelic, and even ambient compositional shades on their second album. It's a pleasing if somewhat somnambulant approach, incongruous yet somehow nice to behold, much like the cover picture of a lion walking on a deserted field with skyscrapers in the background. As songwriters, they have an off-kilter nonchalant charm similar to those of early '70s British psych-into-prog figures like Syd Barrett, Kevin Ayers, an   [ read more ]

Sometimes the best records were not meant to be records at all. There are more than a few folks out there who argue the best songs Pavement ever recorded appear on the Watery Domestic EP or that Chris Bell's I Am the Cosmos exceeds anything Big Star ever released. Summer Hymns' second album, A Celebratory Arm Gesture, is a lush collection of songs and interludes that expand on the magic of their hazy debut, Voice Brother and Sister. Decidedly more uptempo, A Celebratory Arm Gesture is a collective vision orchestrated by five constantly evolving talents. While Voice Brother and Sister was built from endless layers of overdubs, A Celebratory Arm Gesture relies more on considered orchestration and crafted arrangements. The new album to   [ read more ]

Summer Hymns. The name really says it all. Oppressive, humid heat and old-time religion -- those are the Georgia traditions that pervade the music by this Athens quartet. "Summer Hymns"'s songs ooze sincerity. Lyrically, Gresham weds the heartfelt with the surreal, painting earnest yet abstract images. Compositions often start as rudimentary folk songs -- maybe just a vocal melody or a lyric and a guitar chord or two -- and the band embellishes Gresham's ideas, adding lush instrumentation and direction    [ read more ]

Summer Hymns' third record, Clemency, could quite possibly be an indie county-rock connoisseur's dream. It takes hold of the subtle textures of Yo La Tengo, the sweetness of Grandaddy, a little Elephant 6 psychedelia, and the country pastures of My Morning Jacket. With new members Matt Dawson (bass, banjo, mandolin, keyboards) and Matt Stoessel (pedal steel, guitar), the Athens quartet settles into a slightly twangy, mostly melancholy proceeding.
