Summer Hymns' second album, A Celebratory Arm Gesture, is a lush collection of songs and interludes that expand on the magic of their hazy debut, Voice Brother and Sister. Decidedly more uptempo, A Celebratory Arm Gesture is a collective vision orchestrated by five constantly evolving talents. While Voice Brother and Sister was built from endless layers of overdubs, A Celebratory Arm Gesture relies more on considered orchestration and crafted arrangements. The new album touches on influences as varied as Robert Wyatt's Ruth is Stranger Than Richard, Neil Young in his tender moments, and instrumental interludes worthy of Eno, Terry Riley or Kid A. Above all, the austere beauty of Summer Hymns stems from Gresham's heartfelt songwriting. Gresham is quietly carving out a niche for himself as a unique and distinctive voice. Prodded by the epic contributions of his bandmates, he has created a gorgeous and complex pop epic.
