Los Angeles is know as a town of reinvention. True to their geographic roots, SUNDAY'S BEST's sophomore effort (appropriately titled The Californian) shows a band reinventing itself, and sloughing off tendencies toward dual guitar noodling and screaming vocals of their post-indie rock adolescence. The Californian at times sees SUNDAY'S BEST embracing the dulcet tones of acoustic guitar layered with the thick, warming hum of a Fender Rhodes. The rock guitar on-slaught with soaring, hook embedded choruses is still present (and hooks as unforgettable as ever) but it is balanced out with rolling downbeat rythyms, melodically hovering bass lines and dedicatedly hushed vocals, delivered with the sincerity and poignancy that only comes with maturity. It's expected that a band re-invent themselves with each new record; it's rare that they actually succeed.
