Superdrag
Though many have dubbed Superdrag a punk-pop or power pop band, their music has shown itself to be atop of the aforementioned genres. Taking as much influence from the British Invasion-style pop of the Beatles and the Zombies as My Bloody Valentine and Hüsker Dü, their songs have always combined melodicism and noise in fully distinct fashion. While many have compared frontman John Davis -- no relation to the Jonathan Davis of Korn or John Davis of Folk Implosion -- to Big Star's Alex Chilton in terms of his throaty vocals, often cyn...[more]

Superdrag's third proper album (there are a couple of singles compilations as well) begins with this lyric: "I want rock and roll, but I don't want to deal with the hassle." Perhaps the line references the Knoxville, TN, band's major label roller coaster ride that began with a decent-sized radio hit ("Sucked Out") and ended in the usual way: Trends changed, the band made a follow-up record that didn't sell as well, and then it was dropped by Elektra. Other than that lyric, though, nothing would ind [ read more ]

When you play in a band for 10 years, you write a lot. Usually, you only get a record out every couple of years, so many songs never see the light of day. Sometimes the version that's issued will be your second or third attempt to get it "right," while the demos are left behind like pieces of evidence. A good percentage of these will be terrible, others might be great, and some will hold sentimental value. These are just some of the things this record is concerned with. Arena Rock Recording Company has put [ read more ]

Knoxville's perennial power-pop stars follow-up 2000's "In The Valley Of Dying Stars" with more trademark rock hooks and "Revolver"-era Beatles stylings. An ideal blend of the ballroom bluster of Big Star, the lonesome twang of Waylon, and the punk fury of The Stooges. These cats can't get out of the way of a good song. Bob Pollard adds vocals to a track.

On their fourth album, Last Call for Vitriol, Superdrag doesn't have any bad blood. Well, not really. Arena Rock Recordings feels like family, and the nasty departure from Elektra is old news. What remains the same is the band's jaunty, two-sided rock sound: candied licks meshed together with spiky cut riffs for a spitfire of real pop/rock. Frontman/guitarist John Davis' vocal kick is killer on the punk fury of "So Insincere" and "The Staggering Genius." However, he makes room [ read more ]

LIMITED RESTOCK! This 5 song EP compiles both the long out of print first two Superdrag 7"s. We've had mail order customers tell us that they've paid collector prices for these singles. We've received requests for them on average of three a month for over two years. We figure we could sell at least 72 copies! A reissue was immanent. A noisy little pop single, "Senorita" DRL-002,

Before vaulting to a major label and polishing up their pop sound for punchy singles like "Sucked Out," Superdrag was a much more interesting band. The Fabulous 8-Track Sound... demonstrates this: it's a collection of Beatles-esque pop gems buried in fuzz, with more than enough intelligent content to appeal to those indie fans who find the slickness of Superdrag's major-label releases unpalatable. The band's mainstream fans might have difficulties getting past the indie orientation of the recordings on Fabu [ read more ]

Some bands have more worthwhile songs than places to put them, and this seems to be the case with Knoxville, TN's guitar pop powerhouse Superdrag. Given the steady stream of singles the band has cranked out during their lifespan, John Davis and his bandmates clearly generate more material than they can use up at the rate they record albums, and Changin' Tires on the Road to Ruin is a collection of demo tapes and live recordings that offers alternate versions of five tunes from earlier {$Superdra [ read more ]
