Sycamore

VINYL FORMAT. David Daniell and Douglas McCombs first met in early 2006 while touring as members of Rhys Chatham's six-guitar Die Donnergotter band. Following the tour, the two spent several months trading albums and discussing making music together; they began their musical collaboration when Daniell moved from New York to Chicago later that year to study pedal steel guitar.

Sycamore is the first album to document the music of this duo. It was recorded by Jeremy Lemos (of Semaphore Recordings) at two, large loft spaces in Chicago chosen for their live acoustics. The recordings totaled seven and a half hours made over the course of five days in June and July of 2008. Daniell and McCombs approached these live recordings as raw materiral which they subsequently edited, arranged, and recomposed (with a nod to Teo Macero's work on Miles Davis' In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew and the work of the French musique concrete masters) into entirely new musical constructions.

Sycamore is a delicate tapestry of spacious and ethereal guitar lines woven into abstract, slow-burning and multi-layered textural improvisations. The sounds blend and overlap to create richly faceted and thickly psychedelic passages, unveiling new layers of detail with each and every listen.
