T. Rex

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Initially a British folk-rock combo called Tyrannosaurus Rex, T. Rex was the primary force in glam rock, thanks to the creative direction of guitarist/vocalist Marc Bolan (born Marc Feld). Bolan created a deliberately trashy form of rock & roll that was proud of its own disposability. T. Rex's music borrowed the underlying sexuality of early rock & roll, adding dirty, simple grooves and fat distorted guitars, as well as an overarching folky/hippie spirituality that always came through the clearest on ballads. While most of his peers concentr...[more]

The album that essentially kick-started the U.K. glam rock craze, Electric Warrior completes T. Rex's transformation from hippie folk-rockers into flamboyant avatars of trashy rock & roll. There are a few vestiges of those early days remaining in the acoustic-driven ballads, but Electric Warrior spends most of its time in a swinging, hip-shaking groove powered by Marc Bolan's warm electric guitar. The music recalls not just the catchy simplicity of early rock & roll, but also the    [ read more ]

Given that the T. Rex/Marc Bolan catalog is cluttered with collections, all recycling much of the same material, it's easy to be suspicious of another hits compilation, such as Hip-0's 2002 release 20th Century Boy: The Ultimate Collection, especially if it's billed as an "ultimate" retrospective. Against all odds, this 23-track disc really is an "ultimate collection," or at least as close as it can possibly get, given the labyrinthine nature of Bolan's catalog. What this gets right is   [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. ...But Now They're Content To Wear Stars On Their Brows. Before Marc Bolan became the glam rock superstar behind T-Rex, he was just a hippy boy with a guitar, writing fantastical Tolkien-inspired folk songs populated by fairies and ogres. But thanks to producer Tony Visconti, this boy & his trusty drum-playing friend Steve Peregrine Took soon had a record contract and this, their debut album, actually made it to the top of the British charts in 1967 when it was released. Stereo version with 1    [ read more ]

REISSUE! The phenomenally popular and influential T.Rex spearheaded the glam-rock movement, a genre owing everything to its quintessential superstar, Marc Bolan. Rivaled only by Bowie, whose own glam period followed in their flamboyant footsteps, Bolan and T.Rex created an incredible vibe and sound whose legacy lives on still. Driven by simple grooves, effortless hooks, trippy vocals, and deliciously fat guitar riffs, their music was infused with both hippie spirituality and raw sexuality-a rich, ripe sonic   [ read more ]

The fourth and final Tyrannosaurus Rex album, originally released by Regal Zonophone in the UK in 1970. Took was replaced on this album by Micky Finn (backing vocals, Moroccan Clay Drums, table, bass, finger cymbals). and Bolan introduced electric guitar to their sound for the first time. Finn's theory on bongo fury was a lot less inspired than Took's and Bolan's songwriting/singing seemed to aim more squarely at the anthemic/glam protocol that was soon to emerge. But this was the final chapter in Tyrannosa   [ read more ]
