Songwriter Tara Jane O'Neil dove into her musical career in 1992 at the tender age of 20, playing bass for the influential Louisville, KY, art punk ensemble Rodan. Though the group lasted only two years, releasing just one full-length, O'Neil's status had grown enough to land her a prominent role in the film {#Half-Cocked}, a fictitious account of a Louisville punk band featuring faces from several other bands such as June of 44, the Grifters, and Rachel's, but a lasting connection was made between O'Neil and Ruby Falls guitarist Cynthia Nelson. {...[more]

After playing the bass with Rodan, pioneers of post-rock and post-hardcore, Tara has formed bands like The Sonora Pine and Retsin (with the writer Cynthia Nelson), and has collaborated with Sebadoh, Papa M, Come, Low and Ida. Her two solo albums "In the Sun Lines" (2001) and "Peregrine" (2000) have a mixture of rural sounds, pop, tropicana and melodies that remind of Joni Mitchell, Brian Eno, and Dusty Springfield, always under the cloak of Tara's magnetism, also present in one of the songs of the "Acuarela   [ read more ]

"This is Tara Jane O'Neil's second solo release in an enthralling career that, since the early 1990s, has seen her appear on seven albums with three bands, each more or less ignored. That she is so little known isn't surprising: her work is uncompromising and devoid of choruses. But it is also elegant, complex and glows from within like a Caravaggio canvas. Tara has honed her skills as a songwriter, singer, home recordist, guitarist, and all around multi-instrumentalist over the course of an amazing career. She has run the gamut of musical diversity, jumping from the crushing rock of Rodan to her folky duo Retsin, and from the elastic experimentalism of The Sonora Pine to the arty metal mania of King Cobra. O'Neil considers herself as much a noise artist as a songwriter, and while this new release -- her third solo full-length -- is haunting and lovely, it's n   [ read more ]

Her fourth solo album on Quarterstick is an acoustic gem blessed with her unique brand of sonic trickery. O'Neil's created an album where a subtle but sure-handed mastery of sounds and experimentation with her craft share equal time with gentle acoustics and deeply personal lyrics. "Armed with an arsenal of minor-key guitars and the ability to play seemingly any instrument that falls into her hands, [Tara Jane] has spent...years creating music that's warm, ethereal, and completely unnerving - the aural equi   [ read more ]

Beautiful solo effort from current RETSIN and former SONORA PINE and RODAN member. Although Tara plays most of the music on the album, she also received a little help from her friends...Dan Littleton of IDA on guitar, Andrew Barker on drums and Samara Lubelski of SONORA PINE and HALL OF FAME on violin.
