2007, Counter Records
Hailing from the poor, insular and dark countryside which surrounds Bath, the Heavy sound both possessed and insinuating, a kind of stealthy wickedness which overflows from their debut album, 'Great Vengeance & Furious Fire'. First, though, comes their single, 'That Kind of Man'. A furious hip soul stomper in which wall upon wall of guitar is rammed up against tight horn riffs and the remarkable vocals float above the melee, 'That Kind Of Man' is the perfect introduction to the Heavy's unique sound. Superficially, 'Coleen' sounds nearer to classic soul territory but there is a UK rawness to the sound, an edginess that makes it pure Heavy. The package is completed by 'Easier', a more laid-back, bluesy version of this band's distinctive template.
