1995, Gold Standard Laboratories
"The Death of a Girl" is the debut release from Oakland-based VUE, known previously as The Audience. Under their former moniker the band released a handful of records during 1997-98 and toured extensively around the U.S. Upon signing to Seattle's perennial Sub Pop imprint in early 1999, "The Audience" was abandoned, rather than tempt fate and legal entanglements from the UK sextet of the same name. Upon completing recording for their forthcoming Sub Pop full length (due February 2000), VUE then ventured back into the studio and recorded the 3 new tracks included here: "Child for You", "Hush Your Head" and "The Death of a Girl". In addition to the 3 new tracks, also included are the 2 from The Audience's now out-of-print single "Young Soul", released on GSL during the summer of 1998. The release of "The Death of a Girl" is prefaced by VUE's appearance at CMJ in September and a brief cross-country trek. The band will tour the U.S. at length in early 2000. Comparisons to a varied cross-section of both classic and underground rock bands are common here, and certainly not without reason: Bowie, Stooges, Birthday Party, Jonathan Fire Eater, Suicide, Pulp, and Television are indicative of the variety of sounds capable from a single band. VUE deliver an urgent, androgynous angst for the new millenium.
