Justin Currie was still in his teens when he co-founded Del Amitri in his hometown of Glasgow. From 1982 to 2002, the band evolved from resourceful D.I.Y. indie combo to international hitmakers. In 2007, Currie released his solo debut, What Is Love For?, on Ryko, which was acclaimed for its superb song craft and somber brilliance. On The Great War, Currie returns with a fresh collection of infectious melodies and ingenious wordplay - a combination of dark lyrical themes melded with a newfound optimism.

Mr Currie is in top form on this record. From the opening track A Man With Nothing To Do, to the final Baby, You Survived, the strong songs just keep coming with consistently high quality. It has been in heavy rotation on my iPod since I picked it up with one highlight being the James Bond-esque The Way That It Falls.

I was lucky enough to catch him acoustically last month playing with the talented Peter Adams and I also recommend seeing him live if he is playing anywhere close to you.
