2002, Hello Sir
Math rock? It just doesn't add up. Prog-rock? Not bloody likely. Post-punk? No way. Call them what you want, but Maserati is making instrumental music that defies easy categorization. Instead the Athens-spawned four-piece incorporates elements of all these styles -- and their musical predecessors -- to create something thats as angry as it is comforting, as abrasive as it is embraceable. This year, after getting knocked around the industry for a while, Maserati reconvened in Andy Baker's (Macha, Mercury Program, Mendoza Line, Jucifer) Chase Park studios to record The Language of Cities. The album captures Maserati showing off their notorious chops without grandstanding, a feat they manage by maintaining the essence and energy of their live show in the studio, something few bands can do now, no matter what kind of music they play.
