The Liturgy of Ghosts

The Unstable Ensemble is a roving avant jazz group made up of individuals stationed in Raleigh, NC; Chicago, IL; and Bloomington, Ind. The Liturgy of Ghosts finds the Ensemble mid-stride into their three-year life span by distinctively sculpting a towering tectonic merging of massive planes and melodic spikes that are absorbed into the molting. Paying minute attention to the behavior of sound, and the haze of natural distortion, magnified white blots and the clicks and ticks of electronics, the UE blurs any lines between the notions of Jazz, Improvisation and New Music. The histories of all three are pillaged and reworked, offering an unlikely body of work from a group originally based in the heart of the Midwest. The focus on electronics and wide arcs of light and timber interplay punctuate the group¹s sense of dynamics, though there are moments when the horns and drums begin the decent into a jazz bed rife with stains and turmoil.
