The Nitrate Hymnal

Gena Rowlands Band follows their Lujo debut recording Le Merde et Les Etoiles with a joint recording with Anti-Social Music (ASM) called The Nitrate Hymnal. ASM is a collective of musicians and composers from New York that includes members of the Hold Steady, Ida, Gutbucket, and World/Inferno Friendship Society. The Nitrate Hymnal Project is a record of songs taken from the hit indie opera of the same name. The Gena Rowlands Band and ASM met three years ago during the creation of the original production of a multimedia opera called The Nitrate Hymnal by Bob Massey (Gena Rowlands Band, ex-Telegraph Melts) and David Wilson (True/False Film Festival). The opera was inspired by 50 years of actual home movies given to Bob by his grandfather, and told a fictional story of a couple who obsessively filmed their lives. For the recording, the through-composed score was cut into songs and reorchestrated by ASM and GRB, then recorded in three days powered by passion and caffeine.
