2012, Phase One/Winley
The Clovers are as advertised: the guys who put the "doo" in doo-wop—way back in 1947, when their first recording, "Don't You Know I Love You," sold 1 million copies. The Clovers' signature song however, will always remain "Love Potion Number Nine." Considered one of the first R&B groups to cross into rock, the Clovers certainly were central in forming both styles. Their easily identifiable sound was rooted in blues and gospel; they didn't follow the pop singing of the Mills Brothers or the Ink Spots, and as a result ended up sounding distinct from their peers in the Orioles and the Larks, some of R&B's original role models. Few rhythm and blues groups in this period could claim the popularity and longevity of the Clovers. This collection of rarities from their Winley Records recordings were originally released on vinyl 45's, remastered for this release. Its bonus songs have previously been available solely as 45's.
