| The pre-cursor to the new LP, The Spell, on Touch & Go, this 7" is another great single by San Diego's The Black Heart Procession. Continuing an eclectic evolution, The Black Heart Procession have moved away from their isolated, haunted chapel chamber music that dominated the first three albums, while still retaining their trademark piano driven depressive mantras. This single takes cues from previous band, Three Mile Pilot, and a big smattering of Low era Bowie to produce a rich, textured single. The A-side, Not Just Words is a terrific swath of instruments gently laid aside each other, creating an intricate manic, depressive, almost orchestral pop song. Side two's, The Mark, has a nice fuzz drone underneath the shimmering miasma of Side Two of Bowie's Low. All in all a very good single, one that certainly was a welcome evolution for the band. I certainly look forward to hearing The Spell. | |
