The Black Keys
The two-man duo comprising the Black Keys, singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney, were in their early twenties when their debut, The Big Come Up, was issued in 2002. From Akron, OH, they play close-to-the-bone, raw blues-rock, the only instrumentation being Auerbach's guitar, Carney's drums, and the occasional organ. Auerbach had a fine, mature, lived-in blues voice for one so young, and the group's material worked in funk, soul, and rock influences from the likes of Jimi Hendrix and James Brown that avoided undue repet...[more]

The third record from the acclaimed guitar-and-drum, delta-blues-infused rock duo from Akron, Ohio. Feeling heartsick from love's tumult, sweating bullets in the middle of the night, drinking lightning from a corn liquor bottle, sitting in a room whose walls are so blue they look black, digging into the joy-and-pain double helix of existence and finding heavy soul, kicking out a blues rock rumpus in search of salvation...this is the electrifying world of The Black Keys! Dan Auerbach's voice is equal parts heartache and hellfire. He hollers with all the sass and sorrow of a drunk at last call, and his guitar playing is just as rambunctious -- going from fleet, foot-stompin' blues workouts to reverb-drenched garage-rock overdrive in a heartbeat. With backing from Patrick Carney, who pounds out sloshed, ramshackle rhythms on a broken drum kit, it all amounts to lots of weathered, world-weary thrills. The Big Come Up is one of the finest albums -- local or otherwise -- [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Recorded by the band in their own Akron, OH studio The Black Keys epitomize DIY. Chulahoma is a collection of songs that were originally written by the late Junior Kimbrough. Reworked and recorded, The Keys capture the very essence of Juniors style better than any other musician today. Roomy and sparse in production the drums/guitar duo fill out every inch of these songs with distorted guitar, drums, and Dan's soulful vocals.

The four tracks on this release have never been released on CD before! The fans of The Black Keys will not be disappointed. "The Moan" is the original studio version that appears on the Alive 7"; "Have Love Will Travel" is the B-side (which is a great rendition of this classic; a different version later appeared on "Thickfreakness"). "Heavy Soul" is a brilliant alternate version included on the vinyl of "The Big Come Up," and their cover of the STOOGES classic "No Fun" (also from the vinyl "The Big Come Up [ read more ]
