The Blood Brothers
Rebellious and nasty, the Blood Brothers defined their own punk-soaked angst rock when they came together in 1997. Jordan Blilie (vocals), Johnny Whitney (vocals), Waxwing's Cody Votolato (guitar), Morgan Henderson (bass), and Mark Gajadhar (drums) all hail from Seattle; they've shared the stage with Pretty Girls Make Graves and the like. 2000 saw the release of the Blood Brothers' debut album, This Adultery Is Ripe. It was a rough-edged, sour set of songs and the press immediately praised the Blood Brothers' scowl at mainstream society. {^M...[more]

In the waning spring days of 2006, The Blood Brothers converged on Seattle's Robert Lang Studios to record Young Machetes, the follow up to their 2004 V2 debut, Crimes. Once again the band teamed with Crimes producer, John Goodmanson (who also mixed and engineered the project) and, in addition, enlisted Guy Picciotto (famed Fugazi member and Rites of Spring founder) and together the two inspired a renewed energy and confidence in the band. Lyrically, Young Machetes remains firmly [ read more ]

The first full-length blueprint for the Blood Brothers' sound, This Adultery Is Ripe neither captures the schizoid sci-fi hardcore of March on Electric Children nor the groove-oriented screamo of their masterpiece, Burn Piano Island, Burn, but still takes the intensity of At the Drive-In to another level and manages to outdo just about any other entry in the genre. "Rescue" brilliantly combines spiky intensity with serious hooks and in the process completely recontextualizes what can [ read more ]

Since forming in 1997, the Seattle-based 5-piece have been gaining fans daily with their constant touring and mindblowing albums. Their sound is totally unique yet slightly familiar. Hints of Fagazi, and Bad Brains, but imagine these bands being played by Captain Beefheart. It's punk, it's hardcore, yet there's this undeniable groove that holds it together. The Love Rhymes With Hideous Car Wreck EP will not only serve as a fantastic entry point for the thousands of kids who saw the band with Coheed a [ read more ]

This energy-core spazz-out session just might make you want to try to attach yourself to the ceiling with your teeth. Higher-pitched and noisier than an army of little dogs, the quintet of youngsters known as the Blood Brothers spew out a relentless wad of spit on Burn Piano Island, Burn, a ferocious album that singes the ears. Their passionate, insane, ranting hardcore is surely not for everyone. It's a truly extreme album at a time when the word "extreme" is used to sell snowboards and SUVs. The Blood Brothers features two singers trading off shrieking into the mic and surprisingly they're shrieking some real [ read more ]

Crimes is Blood Brothers' V2 debut, and their fourth album overall. The quintet is still led by blaring, interwoven vocals of Johnny Whitney and Jordan Blilie. One screams and yelps in a very high register, the other is not so high, but still great at screaming. The Brothers' basic sound is jagged and post-punk-derived, full of hyper percussion and jerking, screeching guitars. But while this might sound like chaos, it's not. Like Whirlwind Heat or the Icarus Line, {$the Blood Brot [ read more ]

Before the release of Young Machetes, the Blood Brothers mentioned that the album would return to the harsher, more frenetic sound of their earlier work. This is true -- especially of the opening song, "Set Fire to the Face on Fire," which immediately commences to shrieking and shredding -- but it doesn't mean that the band completely did away with the overtures they made toward a more accessible sound on their previous album, Crimes. Instead, the Blood Brothers find sneakier ways of incorpor [ read more ]
