The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Named in tribute to the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist and his influence in introducing Eastern culture and music into the world of Western rock and roll, the Brian Jonestown Massacre formed in San Francisco, California in 1990. Some 40 different members passed through the group's ranks over the next half of the decade, but throughout their focal point remained singer/guitarist Anton Newcombe, who along with bassist Matt Hollywood, guitarist Dean Taylor, organist Mara Regal, accordionist Dawn Thomas, drummer Brian Glaze and Spokesman for the Revolution...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. 2003 release from the San Francisco psychedelic-rock kids. Frontman Anton Newcombe's up to his old shenanigans, trying to keep the BJM sound spicy. "...Newcombe invites in a few guest vocalists, shifts lyrical angles and indulges in enough orchestral cinematics to override his own ominous self-mythology and break through the clouds again and again. Bob your head to the driving 'When Jokers Attack,' or check the triumphant 'Geezers' for a slow dance with the dweller on the threshold. There're s [ read more ]

The album's antecedents are clear, inspired by psychedelia as they were by punk's nihilism, pulling both strands into a doom-laden, experimental sound quite distinct from anything that had come before or since. BJM uses this as their touchstone, lovingly re-creating the moods and atmospheres of the past.

Satanic Majesties was probably the Stones' least commercial album, filled with weird eastern drones, psychedelia-drenched chantings about (inner & outer) space, and arcane instrumentals like 'Gomper'. Most people quickly forget it, but not these guys: they've put together a tribute that goes it one better, bringing it up to date with the benefit of all the additional weirdness that's been discovered in the past 28 years. Actually more song-oriented than the Stones' effort, while at the same time more [ read more ]

Recorded virtually live in the studio, Take It From the Man presents a different facet of the group's style, a country-blues driven groove with clear nods to the Stones, Beatles, Jesus & Mary Chain and (some say) even the Stone Roses. It's a song-oriented record, filled as before with lyrics that make you stop and think, pushed forward by the band's dynamic new three-guitar lineup, reminiscent in that respect of the Shake Some Action-vintage Flamin' Groovies. But this is no oldie-fest; the derivative [ read more ]

Originally released in 1997 now reissued on 'a records' Anton Newcombe's own record label with new artwork. BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many LA and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Originally Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase- the name comes from Stones guitarist Brian Jones combined with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones, but hi [ read more ]

At the risk of further belaboring a rather obvious point, with Thank God for Mental Illness, their third collection of absolutely stunning music in 1996, the Brian Jonestown Massacre parallels the prolific and effortless brilliance of the Rolling Stones at their fevered late-1960s peak; the sheer scope of their achievements is stunning- rarely are bands quite so productive, or quite so consistently amazing. Thank God is the BJM's down-and-dirty country-blues outing, all 13-odd track [ read more ]

Redolent with the spirit of such high priests of effects and delay as Loop, Spaceman 3, and My Bloody Valentine, not to mention a fair dollop of the Jesus and Mary Chain . Methodrone clearly is the sum of its influences. Thankfully BJM does a very solid job with them throughout the album's course of over 70 minutes. With The Dandy Warhols, The Brian Jonestown Massacre is one of the subjects of the documentary DIG!, winner of the 2004 Grand Jury Prize Documentary at Sundance. DIG! is also a [ read more ]
