The Clientele
Retrofitted pop band the Clientele had obvious roots in the hazy, autumnal glare of Galaxie 500 and Felt. Just as those bands took their Velvet Underground and Television records to heart without being derivative, the Clientele were able to chalk up an extensive discography riddled with lush melodies of their own without sounding like a tribute band. Think of your favorite '60s pop band and odds are they're in the Clientele's blood.
The London-based band formed in mid-1997, consisting of Alasdair MacLean (guitar and vocals), Innes Phillips (guit...[more]

London's Clientele released a series of 7" singles on various small imprints from 1998-2001, which were later collected on one release, "Suburban Light." The subsequent critical acclaim raised the trio from underground cult status to full blown pop phenomenon. This, their first full-length, promises to further cement their status. Languid melodies and delicate choruses combine to transport the listener to a hazy dreamlike world of witty and sardonic tales of love, loss, possibilities, and dreams. A beautifu [ read more ]

Every once in a while, one hears a rustling in the bushes -- a veritable buzz. All your friends are talking about a record they stumbled upon, by a band that will affect the world. Such is the nature of the organic groundswell surrounding The Clientele, who creates an enchanting sound that is haunting, fragile, sublime, yet also strangely tragic. After all the sold-out 7-inches ? present-day collectors' items, no less ? and positive critical reception comes the biggest step yet for London's finest [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Bonfires on the Heath is a return to the Clientele's roots; the dreamlike suburban landscapes first encountered in the early singles, their trippy sense of menace stronger now. Back in London, they've drawn on older traditions of English folk, which exist here side by side with the band's more familiar bossa and pop elements. Mel Draisey's contributions on piano and violin add beautifully to Alasdair MacLean's timeless, eerie songs. Instantly identifiable, the Clientele sound like no on [ read more ]

On their third full-length, The Clientele are setting free their inner Monkees with a lovely blend of Big Star twisted powerpop, Byrdsian country achin', and flashes of The Beatles at their most joyful and upbeat. The ghosts, half-light, and uncertainties remain, but included in this music is a newfound optimism. With the addition of piano and violin, the band paints from a broader palette, adding splashes of pedal steel and slide guitar to their already lush songs. This is the third, and last, of a trilogy of E.P.s the Clientele have recorded for Acuarela. They have always used the Acuarela E.P.s as a way to stretch out between albums, to create a through-the-looking-glass version of the band that shadows the better-known history of their albums. Ariadne experimented with drones and minimalism, The Lost Weekend stretched the foggy sound of their debut to epic proportions. In contrast That Night, a Forest Grew is the most commercial and -shockingly [ read more ]
