The Dears, a loose collective of Montreal-area musicians formed in 1995, are led by the charismatic Murray Lightburn. Citing Serge Gainsbourg as a major influence, the band combines cabaret-style vocals with a moody, intense brand of orchestral pop/rock. Lightburn's vision for the band is to create music out of real emotions, often giving his performances the feel of a musical therapy session. Given the level of intensity that this vision can require, it's not surprising that the Dears have endured numerous member defections, including a guitarist, drummer, a...[more]

The Dears' No Cities Left, the greatest and grandest work from a band for whom "epic" seems too cheap a descriptor, the ultimate culmination of the band's unhinged onstage catharsis and studio sophistication. A record about darkness and a central theme of hope in the face of horror, the record's coolly dramatic first single, "Lost in the Plot" will usher in their gorgeous orchestral pop onto US airwaves this fall. End Of A Hollywood Bedtime Story is pop-noir rock group the Dears' debut album. This is the band that has been astounding audiences with its trademark switched-on orchestral-pop-romantique sound, often performing live with the Cosmopolitan City Orchestra, an octet of classically trained musicians. Led by Mr. Lightburn himself, the group continues to move forward alongside their ever evolving music, which grows heavier and heavier as time progresses.

In the late nineties, The Dears were an unconfirmed rumour of ardour; full of possibility; propelled by passion, alienation, and alcohol. By 2001, they ceased to be a rumour; they were real and dark. The NME named The Dears as "Probably the Best New Band in the World." Gang of Losers is at once a classic Dears album and a bold step forward. It moves from grinding guitar solos to ethereal vocals, pre-occupied with the themes of ostracization, social class and indie rock cool. The album features the se   [ read more ]

Hundreds of shows, and adding thousands of new fans to their community, along comes the inspired concept EP, PROTEST; a harrowing mini-concept-album that rolls operatic hysteria, ominous post-punk rumbling and cosmic Christmas music into a soundtrack for the end of the world. The only thing more unnerving than hearing Lightburn solemnly intone that there is "no hope before destruction" is the knowledge that all this is merely the set-up for what is to come. Protest is a three-part conceptual    [ read more ]

After the orchestral extravaganza of 2004's fantastic No Cities Left, the Dears didn't leave themselves much room on their next album to go even bigger, lusher, more orchestral. It would be too much, and they knew it, so instead they chose to strip down their arrangements, make them simpler and less ornate. This isn't to say that Gang of Losers is just Murray Lightburn playing an acoustic guitar and crooning forlornly, but it does mean that the Dears seem to have traded in their strings and h   [ read more ]
