The Dirtbombs
One of Mick Collins' many post-Gories projects, for years the Dirtbombs seemed to exist more in concept than in reality. As if in reaction to the bass-less sound of the Gories, the band brought together two drummers, two bass players, and Collins on vocals and guitar. And other than consistently loud volumes and lots of noise, the Dirtbombs actually had a surprisingly diverse sound, composing across a broad spectrum of styles from garage rock, punk, and glam, to classic soul and R&B. They began primarily as a 7" band, putting out five singles befo...[more]

The Dirtbombs are an established band to say the least -- they've poured years of hard work into their Detroit rock resonance. It isn't just their sound that sets them apart -- having two drummers and cooler-than-your-average-frontman Mick Collins is hardly average. "Dangerous Magical Noise" is hardly an average album either. Imagine the industrial heart of the Motor City as a pulsating noise with get-up-and-go party sounds, a bluesy attitude, and a frontman who clearly loves soul and Motown.

VINYL FORMAT. The folks at Soundflat Records are proud to present the new Dirtbombs single. Being a German label they had one simple wish, 'Could the worlds greatest soul-punk band do one song in German?' the band complied and the choice of songs was then made, ?Tanzen Gehn'? (?Go Dancing?), the German new wave hit from Hubert Kah. Of course the Dirtbombs version is a whole lot groovier and rocking than the original (they are the Dirtbombs, after all). In the nearly ten years The Dirtbombs have existed, a lot of bass players have come and gone, a lot of touring has been logged, and a lot of singles released. Because anybody who gets in touch with Mick Collins and can cough up a small fee for studio time can release a Dirtbombs single, some of the Dirtbombs' very best tracks have seen the light of day only on seven inches pressed in small quantities (often released in foreign countries) that go out of print almost immediately. Hell, some singles were given [ read more ]

After their rollicking tribute to soul music on 2001's excellent Ultraglide in Black, Detroit's Dirtbombs went back to thee garage. Dangerous Magical Noise is an exciting, sweaty, loud, and dirty record, their best yet -- best songs, best production (by the always reliable Jim Diamond), best everything. Mick Collins and his gang of thugs are on top of the heap of overhyped rock coming out of Detroit quicker than the Tigers' and Lions' annual collapses. Like their compatriots {$the Wh [ read more ]

"The best albums are all compilations, anyway. Why? Because they're made up of SINGLES, duh," Mick Collins writes in his liner notes to the If You Don't Already Have a Look collection of various 7" sides, compilation tracks, and unreleased items, and you've got to admit that Collins walks it like he talks it. The Dirtbombs have released three albums and about twenty 7"ers (by themselves or as splits) during their first decade of doing the rock thing, and while the 2001 album {^Ultragli [ read more ]

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome America's newest protest singer -- Mick Collins! OK, that's going a bit far to make a point, but Collins does seem to have more serious matters on his mind than usual on the fourth album from the Dirtbombs, We Have You Surrounded. Fans looking for more of the Dirtbombs' patented R&B-seasoned garage punk assault still get what they came for with tunes like "Ever Lovin' Man" and "I Hear the Sirens," and those fascinated by the band's way with a c [ read more ]
