The Fall

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Out of all the late-'70s punk and post-punk bands, none were longer lived or more prolific than the Fall. Throughout their career, the band underwent a myriad lineup changes, but at the center of it all was vocalist Mark E. Smith. With his snarling, nearly incomprehensible vocals and consuming bitter cynicism, Smith became a cult legend in indie and alternative rock. Over the course of their career, the Fall went through a number of shifts in musical style, yet the foundation of their sound was a near-cacophonous, amelodic jagged jumble of guitars, sing-sp...[more]

Originally released through Matador Records in 1994, this album is a typical Fall outing filled with sarcasm, vigor and fury. The band experiments with techno, tapes and the usual sparse rock arrangements. Highlights feature cover versions of Henry Cow's "War" and The Monks "Shut Up". Other noteworthy songs include the popish "Behind The Counter" and the enraged "Hey! Student", a rewrite of the band's "Hey! Fascist" from 1977. The bonus disc features John Peel sessions along with rare singles, remixes and a   [ read more ]

The mighty Fall spent just over two years at Phonogram in the early '90s, propelled to their first (and only) major label by a consistent string of indie hits during the late '80s and an ever-increasing fan base. Their trio of albums for the label (1990's Extricate, 1991's Shift-Work, and 1992's Code: Selfish) saw Mark E. Smith and company moving from the smoother, garage-influenced sound of their Beggars Banquet period to a spare, experimental vision of indie rock -- more {\Kr   [ read more ]

For the first time ever, The Fall's output from 1990?2000 is released on CD! Mark E. Smith's dour lyrical surrealism and half?chewed delivery front The Fall's corrosive, acidic take on techno, rockabilly, reggae, glam rock, and punk. There are also some bizarre cover versions, as The Fall twist beyond all recognition classics like "Lost In Music" and "Behind The Counter." It adds up to an album that is random yet oddly consistent; chaotic and abstract yet stitched together with sense by the only man who c   [ read more ]
