The Flaming Stars

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

The garage band the Flaming Stars came together in 1994 under the guidance of ex-Gallon Drunk drummer Max Decharne (vocals/keyboards). Joining him are Paul Dempsey (bass), Joe Whitney (drums), Mark Hosking (guitar), and Huck Whitney (guitar). The Flaming Stars, who spark a haunting swagger similar to Nick Cave and the Tindersticks, spent the next year wowing European audiences while honing a dark, guitar-driven sound. In March 1995, the Flaming Stars issued their debut EP, Hospital, Heaven or Hell. U.K. radio personalities John Peel and {$St...[more]

Here's a talented and not very well-known band with an impressive fifth studio album that's worth looking out for. Singer/pianist Max Decharne has a cool, Lou Reed-like voice that propels his smooth, hip, spaghetti western-sounding tunes. There's plenty of mood here and noir-like gloom. The instrumentals prove that the Flaming Stars can rock when need be. "Killjoy" has some fine piano bits and on "Baby Steps" the band shows it can really let loose. But the majority of the tunes tend tow   [ read more ]

Unlike vintage culture vultures riding the retro wave, The Flaming Stars-with noted pulp fiction expert Max Décharné as leader-seem to write themselves into the seedy realm of pulp and noir from inside out. Critics have made comparisons to stalwarts such as Ennio Morricone and Lee Hazelwood as well as contemporaries like The Jesus and Mary Chain, Nick Cave, and The Tindersticks, proving that The Flaming Stars possess the key to a strange, timeless world untouched by trends or naďve nostalgia. THE FLAMING STARS are a garage band. That's garage as in loud guitars, valve amps, cheap electric organ and trashcan drums. They play live in the studio, live on the radio and live on stage. Formed in December 1994, they have regularly filled venues such as The Garage, and the LA2, and venues around the country, as well as playing sell-out tours around Europe and in Japan. Always prolific, THE FALMING STARS recorded sessions for John Peel on Radio 1 and Sean Hughes on GLR, followed by the release   [ read more ]

Since the FLAMING STARS first EP in 1995, the UK band have released six albums, ten singles, gigged extensively in the UK and Germany, and played shows in France, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Greece and Japan. The FLAMING STARS have a caustic sophistication at a constant tug-of-war with the deep-down sleaze 'n' roll straight from the bar room floor. Unlike typical garage acts immortalizing vintage juvenilia, the FLAMING STARS carve out a sultry, mysterious world with their sound. Their sound combines    [ read more ]

'Pathway' is the Flaming Stars 4th album, and fits stunningly into the sophisticated grind 'n' roll niche that they have made for themselves over the last few years. Recorded at the legendary studio of the same name, 'Pathway' features a photographic diary of those sessions in October '98 and January this year, courtesy of Mary Scanlon, and is testament to the blood, sweat (but not too many tears) that have gone into this album.

Brand new. These songs are not available anywhere else. 2 new songs from the U.K.'s FLAMING STARS. Recorded June 2001. Musically these sharp-suited garagists conjure up outlaw country & saloon lounge. Music that one journalist fittingly called "NICK CAVE meets ELVIS in a whiskey bar". The band is fronted by singer and keyboard player Max Décharné, former drummer with GALLON DRUNK, who is also the author of four books and a regular contributor to Mojo and Bizarre magazines. London After Midnight is 42 pieces of irrefutable proof that the Flaming Stars were one of the great under-sung groups of the late '90s/early 2000s. Produced with a golden Spector in a dustbin touch by Liam Watson, Ed Deegan, and the band themselves, they trod a narrow strip between the garage rock revivalism of the Billy Childish school, the punk blues of the Jon Spencer acolytes, and the nocturnal balladry of the Tindersticks and the Bad Seeds, managing to sound both like    [ read more ]

The Flaming Stars' seventh full-length album finds Max Decharne and his partners in crime still walking the dark alleys of the film noir city they've created in song, and it remains a gloriously dingy place to visit. Suggesting Tindersticks fused with the muscle and attitude of the Bad Seeds, the Flaming Stars spin compelling stories from the sinister corners in the human heart, and Born Under a Bad Neon Sign is every bit as evocative as the pulp paperback illustration that graces its f   [ read more ]
