Taking the best of post-punk, new wave, and pop as inspiration, Sunderland's Futureheads were among the best of the U.K.'s "angular" movement, which also included Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party. The band began as a trio of vocalist/guitarist Barry Hyde, bassist Jaff, and drummer Pete Brewis. Hyde and Brewis were tutors at a lottery-funded organization called the Sunderland City Detached Youth Project, which aimed to get kids off the street by having them play music instead. The Futureheads formed in 2000, in Sunderland. More specifically, in Barry's garage really. The line-up of the band at that point consisted of Jaff (Bass, Vocals), Barry Hyde (Guitar, Vocals), Ross Millard (Guitar, Vocals), and Peter Brewis, now of cerebral pop-masterpiece-makers, Field Music (Drums, Vocals). The recording of of News and Tributes took place over a period of 6 weeks in winter 2005 in a remote farmhouse near Scarborough, in North Yorkshire.
