The Gits
On its surface, the idea or memory of the Gits carries with it an undertone of urban darkness and human waste, but the story would be unfairly abbreviated if the killing of vocalist Mia Zapata exclusively defined the group. That is in part because the Gits in life and action helped define something themselves, if not a movement, then a place and time. A very particular brand of punk with a distinct perspective was emanating out of the American northwest during the early '90s, and the Gits were instrumental contributors to this new scene. The album is primarily a collection of live recordings of this Seattle band, with outtakes and such sprinkled in. The music is p [ read more ]

Enter... the Conquering Chicken, originally recorded in 1993, is THE GITS second studio album. Producer Jack Endino (of NIRVANA and MUDHONEY recording fame) re-mixed the songs, and nine bonus tracks have been added including 2 recently found never before heard studio tracks. It's hard not to feel a sense of poignancy and betrayed promise while listening to the Gits that has nothing to do with the music. The Gits played music that was deeply emotional but was also loud, muscular, and utterly fearless, and it's not hard to imagine that given time they would have made the same impression nationwide that they did in their hometown of Seattle, where they were a popular and deeply respected band at a time when the city was enjoying its short-lived status as Rock Capitol of the [ read more ]
