GIZMOS: 1981 NYC DEMOS--THE MIDWEST CAN BE ALLRIGHT, features seven songs recorded shortly before the final incarnation of the group disbanded. Only the title track, 'The Midwest Can Be Allright,' was previously released--on the long out-of-print 1981 Hoosier punk/new wave sampler, RED SNERTS--THE SOUND OF GULCHER. Now, 20 years after they were recorded, all seven of these sought-after songs have been digitally remastered for release on the original Gulcher label. Many consider these tracks the coming-of-age of songwriter/lead vocalist/guitarist Dale Lawrence, who went on to form the critically acclained Vulgar Boatmen. Guitarist Tim Carroll led the hyperbilly band Blue Chieftains to success, and now enjoys a solo career in Nashville, Tennessee, writing songs that have been covered by the likes of John Prine and Robbie Fulks. Billy Nightshade relocated to Boston as bass guitarist for Unattached, hooking up with his brother Mark Frazier on guitar, and Jamie Severens of the Jetsons on lead vocals. A recent Gizmos reunion in Bloomington, Indiana, had the dance floor rocking with 20-something kids singing along to these songs, learned from cassette tapes dubbed and re-dubbed over the past two decades.
