Boys and Girls in America (recorded in the Summer of 2006 with John Agnello - Sonic Youth, Alice Cooper, Dinosaur Jr., Bob Dylan, etc.) is a quintessential sonic mission statement of the band - it's a true blue classic rock n roll record in the making - delivered by one of the nation's classic bands in the making. Thematically, the album addresses the travels and travails of the relationships between the x & y's of our great nation. The complex Catholicism meets character driven narrative of Separation Sunday is not the driving force of Boys and Girls in America. Instead, The Hold Steady return to their roots, their love of writing, making and playing rock n roll for the sake and respect of rock n roll; ripe with anthemic choruses, genre defining and mind blowing guitar solos, lyrical wit and the masterful mix of the keyboards, drums and bass along with several sonic delights. From evocative and heartfelt ballads to bombastic barroom rock anthems, Boys and Girls in America successfully captures the essence and dynamic off-the-cuff musical mastery that is The Hold Steady.

   TW - new paltz, NY,
It's hard to not like (love) this band, but it's certainly possible to not understand them. Does that piss you off? Good. Rock n roll should do this to people. Chew on this, throw up your apathy, and recognize the difference between imitation and appropriation. Finn's lyrics are right on the money. Those who disagree were probably born at the age of 45.

Not a bad album, kinda average songwriting by my book.....but as for the arguement regarding the vocal/lyrics - Is it just me or are they barely audible for the most part of the album. It was song 3 before they raised to a level where i could pick out the odd word. Shockingly poor vocal mix! Nice big guitar sound though.

Matt DeVries - Chicago, IL, USA
Great album - to me this is just a fun album to listen too, musically it is nothing special, but the band readily admits to that. Plus, their live show is nothing but a fun time both for the band and the crowd!

Will T - Chattanooga, TN, USA
Why are people so into this? The singer's vocal style and lyrics are the WORST. This band destroys any little remaining faith I have in the reviews on this site. Be wary, unless you like bad bar-rock or something.

John-Michael - Chattanooga, TN, TN, USA
Boys and Girls is the Hold Steady's break through record in terms of finally finding their sound. The bands early work seemed tied firmly to Craig Fin's previous band Lifter Puller, while Boys and Girls has the band embracing the, up until now subtle, Bruce Springsteen influences that snuck into those older songs. This is the bands Born to Run, narrative lyrics and classic rock and roll vibes and all. This isn't bar rock in the sense that you'd ever see the Hold Steady holding court at your local watering hole, but in that you could play this in any blue collar bar from coast to coast and find people nodding their heads.

   Wyatt - Fayetteville, AR,
Impeccable songwriting and fantastic arrangements--can't ask for much more. This release really delievers the goods in a truly triumphant way. Finn and Co. make you realize that you might not have been the only screw-up in high school!!

p@ Mullen - Minneapolis, MN, USA
Not quite as good as the first album. But it's better than "Separation Sunday" (which was good in its own right). It all depends on whether or not you think the keyboards round out their sound or if you liked the more LFTR PLLR-esq sound of the first album. I mean, it's two guys from LFTR PLLR, so it'll always sound a bit like them, but this is the furthest from their old band they've gotten. That all being said, it's classic rock with the classic Craig Finn touch. Lots of talk of pain killers, gambling and classic rock. My only complaint is that the back-up vocals sound a bit weird. They've grown on me, but whoever does the back-up vocals doesn't exactly have a "classic" sound, but then again, the vocals in general don't have a classic sound. You either like them or you don't...but I suggest you give them a chance, because this band is dynamite (on album and live). Nothing groundbreaking here but it's a good tribute to all of their influences (Springsteen is a big one that comes to mind) and done quite well.

   brendan - arlington, MA, usa
this is the greatest album ever. holy crap.

Michael Jakus - Milwaukee, WI, USA
This album is brilliant, it's like a parallel universe great song writer met a parallel universe rockin' band and laid down a sweet album that hits close to home, and then the smarmy lyrics are turned up just enough to make you want to dance your ass off.

Bryan Middleton - Los Angeles, CA, United States
J.P., don't sweat it bro. Stay in tonight if you gotta. Work tomorrow would be a drag if you stayed out 'til last call, I understand. But hey if you change your mind, the rest of us will be out at the Moon Tower, having the time of our lives. And this is the soundtrack.

Bubba jones - china, AL, USA
Yeah, same thing that guy said. Except, replace "terrible" with "super", "horrific" with "keen", and "AWFUL" with "very good." A+ baby. This rocks.

   J.P. - Brooklyn, NY, USA
What is wrong with everyone? This sounds like a terrible parallel-universe Minutemen meets a terrible parallel-universe Bruce Springsteen. Then they turn the horrific smarmy speak-sung vocals really high in the mix so you can hear the moronic lyrics really well. THIS BAND IS AWFUL!!!!
