The Long Blondes
Dorian Cox (guitar), Reenie Delaney (bass), Emma Chaplin (guitar/vocals), Kate Jackson (vocals), and Screech Louder (drums) comprise the glamorous new wave-tinged stylings of the Long Blondes. The Sheffield, England five-piece came together in 2005 and issued their debut, "Autonomy Boy"/"Long Blonde," a split 7" with the Boyfriends shortly thereafter. A handful of independent singles for Angular Records and Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation followed into 2006, as did the NME Philip Hall Radar Award, which has previously been presented ...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. A four song 12" of their UK indie hit "Giddy Stratospheres" that's all fun and frenzied guitars, handclaps, call and response shouting. A five-minute dance pop song that builds, swells, bursts into absolute madness. Comes packaged in it's own plastic shopping bag ready to take anywhere. VINYL FORMAT. They want to be as good at writing hit songs as Abba. Yeah, they like Joy Division and all that, but not half as much as they like Dusty, disco, and Del Shannon. The aim was to form a fantasy group: Nico, Nancy Sinatra, Diana Dors, Barbara Windsor. Sexy and literate, flippant and heartbreaking all at once. This is the next chapter of Sheffield's idiosyncratic musical heritage: the suburban disco fantasies of The Human League, the opulent ridiculousness of ABC, the seedy glamour of Pulp.

VINYL FORMAT. Familiar retro influences, like Pet Shop Boys, Blondie, and Pulp are recalled but not imitated, resulting in an original and relevant sophomore album. With their signature down-to-earth narratives forming intelligent and sharp observations about romance and life, one might get an impression of a group with their feet firmly on the ground. These lyrics, however, are set to a rich, synthy, electronic sound that suggest the moment New Order's eardrums first vibrated to house and disco in NYC, 198 [ read more ]

More red hot pop from the Sheffield stylemeisters. Guilt is straight up dancing music - the rhythmic guitars supply the melody and the drumming inspires the swinging hips, both building up to the archetypal catchy chorus. the lyrical content surmises over blurry post night-out events, and with its dance floor potential, Guilt would be a perfect soundtrack for a night on the town.

Following in the shabbily glamorous footsteps of fellow Sheffield residents Pulp, the Long Blondes' debut album, Someone to Drive You Home, is a snappy pop album of quintessentially English vignettes about how growing up is hard to do. The quintet, which is fronted by femme fatale vocalist Kate Jackson, will make you fall in love with their girlish innocence, then steal your boyfriend and break your heart. The Long Blondes make it all seem dangerously romantic, but in a coquettish kind of [ read more ]
