The Louvin Brothers

From the close-harmony brother acts of the '30s evolved Charlie and Ira Louvin, ranking among the top duos in country music history. With Ira's incredibly high, pure tenor and Charlie's emotional and smooth melody tenor, they learned well from the Bolick brothers (the Blue Sky Boys), the Monroe Brothers, the Delmore Brothers, and other major family duos of the previous generation, preserving the old-time flavor while bringing this genre into the '50s, when country music moved to a newer sound. Whatever type of songs they recorded -- gospel, folk, ...[more]

In the 1950s, a time when Nashville was beginning to sand off the rough edges of country music and move in a more "modern" and pop-influenced direction, the Louvin Brothers were at once a breath of fresh air and a reminder of the music's Appalachian traditions. The close harmonies of Ira and Charlie Louvin reflected the influence of earlier family harmony acts such as the Delmore Brothers, and Bill and Charlie Monroe, but few (if any) duos in country history brought their voices t   [ read more ]

Satan Is Real is the Louvin Brothers' best known album, largely because of its bold title and its eccentric cover artwork, in which Charlie and Ira Louvin, surrounded by flames symbolizing Hades, pose in front of a huge, cross-eyed model of the Devil. While more than a few hipsters have found an ironic laugh in the album's over-the-top imagery, one listen to the music confirms that the Louvin Brothers weren't joking in any way, shape or form. Satan Is Real is an album of fierce, plain spok   [ read more ]

Included is a re-recording for Capitol of the title song and "The Great Atomic Power," plus "Searching for a Soldier's Grave" and other mostly sacred "songs of those who serve God and country." ~ George Bedard, All Music Guide

One of the many "theme" albums the Louvin Brothers released during their tenure at Capitol Records (which was assembled from older recordings by the label two years after Ira Louvin's death), The Louvin Brothers Sing the Great Roy Acuff Songs finds Charlie and Ira interpreting 12 songs made famous by another one of country music's staunch traditionalists, Roy Acuff. Acuff's tunes prove to be a good match for the Louvins, especially on inspirational numbers such as {&"Wreck on t   [ read more ]

While Charlie and Ira Louvin could sing upbeat material when they were of a mind -- the lively "Cash on the Barrelhead" and "Pitfall" were among their hits -- happy songs didn't seem to come naturally to them, and when they were given the opportunity to make their first long-playing album in 1956, they opted to record a set of downbeat numbers called Tragic Songs of Life. The album ranks among the Louvin Brothers' finest recordings, a collection of numbers in the ballad tradition that span   [ read more ]

Arguably the greatest duet and brother act in country history, Ira and Charlie Louvin made remarkably moving, simply performed songs about their faith and lives, with only guitar and mandolin backing, reflecting the values of country with more sincerity and genuine feeling than hundreds of elaborately produced and packaged albums have since. Rounder issued these numbers on album in the late '70s, and reissued them on CD in 1991. The digital backdrop doesn't drain the authority from their voices; in   [ read more ]

What's accurate about this title is that it does contain 20 songs recorded by the Louvin Brothers. This "All-Time Greatest Hits" business is a total crock. There are a few well-known numbers tossed in here for measure, such as their version of "Great Speckled Bird," "Knoxville Girl," "When I Stop Dreaming," and "I Love You Best of All," but much of the rest are incidental cuts. Still, it is the Louvins, a group who never issued a bad record. This is ok, but there are far better compilation   [ read more ]

This collection is an accompanying volume to TeeVee's Louvin Brothers' 20 All-Time Greatest Hits. It fares far better as a representative sample of the Louvin Brothers' gospel music than the other did as a best-of. Here are 20 tracks, with all the Louvins' sacred classics like "The Family That Prays Together," "The Kneeling Drunkard's Plea," "Wreck on the Highway," "Oh Why Not Tonight," "Praying," and many more. But even here, the greatest Louvin church tune is missing: {   [ read more ]
