A fully realized concept album inspired by the suicide of a close friend of Mars Volta founders Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavalas, "De-Loused in the Comatorium"'s narrative consists of fantastic worlds and adventures that Cedric imagines the friend experiencing while in a coma following an unsuccessful suicide attempt. Although the story ends tragically, the creators insist that this is a celebration of the adventurous and daring life that their friend lived.

On this record, The Mars Volta is: Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (guitars), Cedric Bixler-Zavalas (vocals), Jon Theodore (drums), Jeremy Michael Ward (sound/manipulation), Michael Flea Balzary (bass), and Ikey Isaiah Owens (keyboards).

Simply put this album has redefined what it is that I considered to be the rock genre. Until listening to the entire album I didn't fully realize what people meant when they said that rock wasn't dead. While corporate refuse like Nickle-back and 3 Doors Down are busy demeaning and watering down the radio stations that so fervently describe themselves as "Hard-Core" this album has reaffirmed my faith that other musicians that are likewise creating masterpieces of Rock Glory are being repressed and thrown by the way side. The fact that this album dropped so unseemingly into the laps of millions is a testament to the word-of-mouth mileage that some cirlces carry, and I believe that this is the perfect example of a time when it is so universally revolutionary that Rock will never be the same again.

What do you get when you cross King Crimson with puertorican salsa band La Fania All-Stars? Why, The Mars Volta of course. In they're stunning debut full-lenght cd, De-Loused in the Comatorium they come nothing short from the two afore mentioned bands. Mixing psychedelia, rock & roll, punk, jam and other countless genres with beats that will make you want to get up and dance salsa. A concept album at heart, but with so much more to offer, De-Loused dwells on the life of the late Julio Venegas. It takes you through a hallucinogenic wonderland caused by a morphine overdose in which the main character, Cerpin Taxt, deals with the good the bad and the very ugly of his subconscious only to re-awake and take his life as he decides that he's better off dead. A truely impressive and massive album worthy of your listen. The Mars Volta are one of the most innovative bands out there right now.

This CD is wonderfully intricate, and just amazing to listen to. You can hear the whole story told, and the all the music composed is so well interlaced that it seems natural. The music fits so well together, that the it just is what is right in the world. When I bought this CD I had no idea what I was in for, however I was pleasantly surprised. I am glad I had taken the tip from a gentleman in Washington that I had never met. I now am an avid fan of The Mars Volta. I own this cd, the Tremulant Ep, and Manuel Dexteriy. Actually I have bought three of the De-loused Comatorium for me and my friends, because who could want anything better as a gift than this CD. This CD is a good-feel-anytime-CD. I would tell anyone to go out and get this CD.

This album is absolutely amazing. I got it after I saw them put on an amazing show with A Perfect Circle. Their stage presence was so storng that I just had to check out the cd. When I first listen to it i just thought it was the best thing to come out in awhile. It's just so seamless. I love concept albums, but most of the time they aren't done that well. The Mars Volta has the formula down to a "T". I think the best song on this album is "Eriatarka". The vocals on this track just send chill right up my spine everytime I listen to it. If you haven't already heard their music, I recommend this be the first track you listen to. The only thing I didn't like about this album was that is wasn't exactly like their live show. At the show I saw they played two fifteen minute songs. I just thought it was so cool.I wanted more of the whole "jam band" thing one the album, but minus that, all and all this is a great album.

Simply amazing. Do yourself a favor and check out this cd. I can't wait for their next.

de-loused in the comatorium is a perfect follow up to the brillian debut trumulant ep. it burst with life and energy that other bands can only dream of. some if the vocals are amazing and leave behind the shouting style of the now defunct at the drive-in. all in all a brilliant album. a must have

Alex Mazick - Seattle, WA, USA
Just As At The Drive-In was on the brink of achieving new heights, they split. It was a sad day, but from the ashes rose The Mars Volta (and Sparta). The Mars Volta being the far more experimental half, brings us a new mathematical formula with each song. As chaotic as it may seem at moments, the beauty is how it all comes together, to push for the pulse pounding choruses, and the ever sporadic, yet lyrical verses, and bridges that are so crisp and clean, it will make you wonder how such musicianship is possible, but it is, for this is The Mars Volta. Their Tremulant EP is eight bucks well spent, and a disc that no modern music fan should be without.

Jacob Riehle - North Hollywood, CA, USA
Any band who's front man that in his last band spun around on the floor kicked me in the shin and didn't even apologise, sucks. I give you mars volta

   Harry S. - Chichester, , United Kingdom
This album is a revolutionary piece, it is a rarity of our times - a completely unique record without compromise. It is not neccesarily an easy listen but it has more staying power than any other record you've ever heard. It is impossible to say there are any standout tracks, they really need to be listened to in the context and glory of this album. Buy this now if you believe in music.

Matt Draper - Aurora, , USA
Let me start from the beginning. I have a friend who told me to get the Tremulant EP, i had second thoughts of getting it because it only had three songs. After hesitation,i bought it considering that i was a huge ATDI fan. The EP was amazing. I began wanting more. I found out the date for Deloused in the Comatorium to come out, and started counting the days, literally. I told everybody about it. Then the day came. I had preordered it from insound, but it hadn't arrived yet. I bought a copy on its release date. I was astonished at the albums relationships to almost every type of music, while at the same time staying true to the sound that was completely their own. This album is a breathtaking look at what music should be and what hour long records should sound like. Keyboards, organ, afros, drums that are so well played that it is frightening, not to mention a voice that is like Freddy Murcury re-incarnated.This album isn't just something you listen to, it is something that you get surronded by and it overcomes you with it's ferocity, and its minute long breaks in what seems to be the silence that you experience when you are just about to fall asleep and travel into a realm of your life that is completly new to you. This album is just that good, buy it right now, go now!.

De-Loused in the Comatorium is the new "Dark Side of the Moon". This album had me stuck in a loop of listening to it over and over again and again since its release. Having heard demo's of "Cicatriz ESP" and "Roulette Dares" quite a while ago, I was pretty excited to hear the album. With both of the two songs completely re-done, and integrated into this hour long floyd-freud, post-apocolyptic, prog-rock masterpiece, I was absolutely blown away. Cedric and Omar have re-created 'Dark Side' for the NEXT millenium. The concept behind the album is eerily similar to the concept behind Pink Floyd's phenomenal album "Dark Side of the Moon". That being that 'Dark Side' was primarily about Syd Barret's lapse into schizophrenia, and The Mars Volta had based their album around a friend of their's who fell into coma after a drug overdose. Also mirroring 'Dark Side', the cd runs as one hour long and one minute long audible excursion. Starting before the coma, slipping deeper and deeper into, and out, by the time "Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt" is over, you're speechless. Various parts in the song even sound like Floyd. Forget what you know about Cedric Bixler Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. Omar is now an odd and somehow strikingly perfect combination of David Gilmour, Robert Fripp, Jimmy Page, and Jimi Hendrix. The remarkable solos and riffs on this disc seem to have come from the early 70's, been blasted through time to the year 3000, and slipped back into 2003. Cedric vocally digitizes Robert Plant's vocal range and often tone. He has crafted a new genre of vocal line; classic broadway-musical numbers sang by an estranged and depressingly expressive and emotional robot from the future. The feeling that listening to this will force through your head is something indescribable. The chorus of "Roulette Dares" will touch a note inside you that you never knew existed, and leave you not knowing how to feel, but comfortably so. "Drunkship of Lanterns" leaves you eerily satisfied with every note he sings. "Cicatriz ESP" is the song you've always wanted to hear, stretched out into an epic constructed of Hendrix-like effects, John Frusciante's (of Red Hot Chili Peppers) distinct tone, and a thickness in the chorus that cannot be parallelled. I'm afraid to name any tracks as my favorite or as TMV's musical best, for fear of leaving all of the other tracks out. Along with the Strom Thorgensen album art, and the help of Flea and John Frusciante, Cedric and Omar's finally unleashed talent has been sewn into a tapestry of what it's like to be inside not only their own minds, but the human mind and thought process itself. Someone has leaked the soundtrack for the year 3000, and after about 30 years of waiting, art has finally again been justified in music. -Eriatarka

My grade five teacher once tried to fail me on a writing assignment because I used too much hyperbole. Since that time, I have carefully watched how much I exaggerate a statement. Thus, when I tell you that 'De-Loused in the Comatorium' is bound to be the record of the decade, setting the tone for everything that is going to come out, and eventually seeping into the mainstream, you had better take my word for it. At The Drive-In played with much potential, but their timely split made way for the sonic demon that is The Mars Volta. Friends of mine have asked me to recommend tracks... my reply is "all of them." Every track is an epic journey through the psyche, starting at your eardrums and ending in your extremities. Jasmine on De-Loused: "If you don't have this album, you're on fucking CRACK."

Gordon Samel - Anchorage, AK, USA
De-Loused in the comatorium is the best thing I've ever heard, it is better than any three things I own, including OK Computer, Kid A, and Amnesiac, this album is so good, I'm happy ATDI broke up, emo-litists be damned! However, to those who feel I've sinned, I say, only the mars volta could understand how much I love their music, but maybe this will give you an idea. It may have taken a dozen listens to hear every song but that was because I was to excited by the ones that sunk their teeth in immediately Inertiatic ESP, Roulette Dares and Cicatriz ESP! Eriatarka, Televators, and Drunkship of Lanterns also hit me in the face. By the way If you like emo, but you don't like this you're either very stupid or stupid beyond imagination. But wait I'm probably stupid too! NOOOO! So in an effort to be right about something, take it from a stupid person, do not buy this album, you're wasting your money and Insound's time, we must stop the mass distribution of the worst (for those of you who aren't too good at reading into sarcasm, I really mean BEST) album ever. Stop it before it's too late!

Miguel Romero - Pennsauken, , USA
De-Loused in the Comatorium offers a fresh musical landscape full of new adventures and as much curiosity as its title invokes. De-Loused digs into your soul and rips out that all natural want for boundless music that you always had inside of you but never had the band capable of producing it. from begining to end you know not what to expect and every twist and unexpected turn will leave your mind gyrating and pulsating with rabid wonder. don't be afraid of the unknown and give it a listen. what else are you going to do, sit back and wait an eternity for the radio to play something new and great?

Spicorama - Santa Cruz, CA, USA
This album is an intense mind blowing journey. TMV will take you through what could only be described as a multiple auditory orgasm. Sure that word has been over used on this site and other well received reviews but this is my honest interpretation of how "I" felt listening to this album. Subtle hints of Latin jazz mixed with free forming emo-rock rhythms catapult the listener into an unexplored dimension. With multiple tempo changes and swift yet melodic approaches to cord progressions this album will most likely be the soundtrack for the Y generation and post X generationalist like myself.

matt cosgrove - leavenworth, KS, USA
The best cd i have bought in a long time. The wide range of influences that The mars Volta taps (all bands i enjoy) helps create a rare album. When was the last time you were able to listen to a cd from start to finish and not get bored. This album is were most bands out want to be but they cant because They are trying to hard. The mars volta just does it

Kevin Nickert - Manchester, MI, USA
Cedric Bixler Zivala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of At the Drive-In return to the underground scene they've dominated, sharper and more passionate than ever. De-loused... is a concept album dedicated to their good friend Julio Venegas who commited suicide in 1996. They take you on a gut wrenching, heart pounding journey through a week long coma in which the choice of life vs. death is made. This album breaks loose from all of the typical boundaries of rock music holding back ATD, and allows them to really flex their muscles. They've endeavored to blend numerous genres into a perfect mold, incinerating the gaps between and all else limited to a single genre. This is by far the best album of the year, a must have.

Sly Morrison - St. Paul, MN, USA
De-Loused is a mix of rock, electronica, dark funk, and epic poetry. It is a concept album that follows Cerpain Taxt on an epic journey that twists its way through the dark roads of excess, abuse, insanity, and death. This is the best concept album since Pink Floyd's the Wall released nearly 25 years ago. I recommend everyone listen to this masterpiece! I give it 10/10!

David Bordessa - Moose Jaw, , Canada
This album was muchly anticipated by myself for a very long time. When I put it on I wore headphones for maximum freakiness (panning, cool). I couldn't believe my ears. This record floored me. It's so visceral, aggressive and affecting. I think De-Loused in the Comatorium will be one of those records you look back on in 5, 10, 20 years and still appreciate it with intense fervor. It reminded me of great Pink Floyd epics like Echoes, Interstellar Overdrive or Shine on You Crazy Diamond. Self indulgence runs high on De-Loused, but the passion and emotion ingrained in the music more than make up for it. It is a harrowing listen. If you didn't like this record you need to quit being a Van Gogh and get your ear back.

Sean Coleman - Linwood, NJ, USA
There's only one way to describe this album: It's a ride. After I purchased it, I closed my eyes, listened to it and got taken to a whole nother world. From the haunting opening of "Son et Lumiere" to the chilling lyrics at the end of the album, "Who brought me here?", you definitley feel the story and the vibe. Definitley a must have for music fans and is a shoe-in as one of the top albums of the year.

Calum Gunn - Livingston, , United Kingdom
Before I start I'm gonna get this out the way: "Afros". "At The Drive-In". Now I have that out of my system, I can dissect this truly unique album - nay, work of art - without resorting to comparisons to the two founder members' old band. De-Loused in the Comatorium is a genreless, often beautiful, often head-cavingly punishing, monster of an album. Spanning a full hour of non-stop music, this album takes you on a journey through the adventures of a character named Cerpin Taxt, who, whilst in a coma, fights the good and evil sides of his conscience, only to emerge from the coma and take his own life. Sounds a little wacky, but when put to music there is nothing more affecting. From the opening of Son Et Lumiere to the final, frantic bars of Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt, the album's ever-shifting moods demand your undivided attention. Throughout, frontman Cedric Bixler Zavala's vocals never cease to amaze, whilst co-founder Omar Rodriguez-Lopez' guitars shift between effect-laden dissonance to the acoustic (yet still strangely dissonant) beauty of Televators. Drummer Jon Theodore, of Golden fame, contributes an incredible sense of rhythm and power whilst the Red Hot Chili Peppers' much lauded bassist Flea gives his all, with even a bass solo in the final track. Ikey Owens' fantastic keyboards shine through in the songs' arrangements, whilst sadly deceased "secret member" Jeremy Ward handles the awe-inspiring effects on vocals and guitars. To say this record is anything short of revolutionary should be a crime. Rarely is music this powerful, this emotional, this so goddamn GOOD, created.

I anticipated this album for 2 years and finally Im going to play it as I write this review.    Chris NU&nez - Margate, , USA
This is an amazing album, it sounds like a cross between Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, with a touch of salsa and jazz. Indeed one of the best albums of the year.

Juan - El Paso, TX, USA
utter insanity. i expected no less from the at the drive-in alumni. omar rodriguez is a genius. you can feel cedric's energy flowing through his voice. a really great buy.

Zach - Huntington Beach, CA, USA
Usually when an album gets so much hype it falls short of the oh so very high expections set (at least with me it tends to happen) but De-Loused blew my expecations out of the water. This album is an instant classic and just amazing. This is like a combination of all their past and present bands (ATDI & De Facto) rolled into one stunning release. With five plus minute songs all over the place this album really draws you in and just doesn't let go. Cedric's vocal's are awe-inspiring and the lyrics, although mostly unitelligable, are beautiful. It takes you all over the place and ends with an probably the album's strongest track, Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt (the last verse after the solo/interlude is stunning). I can't say enough about this album and if you don't own it you are in big trouble.
