The Microphones was the alias of Anacortes, WA-based lo-fi psych-pop mastermind Phil Elvrum, also known for his work as a member of K Records bands D+ and Old Time Relijun. Following a series of cassettes on the local Knw-Yr-Own label, including Wires and Cords, Tests, and a self-titled effort, the Microphones issued their first full-length effort, also titled Tests, on the Elsinor label in the autumn 1999. Don't Wake Me Up appeared on K the next summer, followed in 2000 by Window and It Was Hot We Stayed in the Water. 2001 saw t...[more]

On previous Microphones albums, Phil Elvrum has explored themes of man communing with nature, describing serene catastrophic entanglements with wind, sea and woods. Mount Eerie is a concept album that takes it up a notch, the self-searching for identity within a universal context. Divided into five parts, it is named after Mt. The new Microphones album Live in Japan February 19th, 21st and 22nd, 2003 features previously unreleased material from singer/songwriter Phil Elverum. These 11 songs are only a sampling of all new songs performed by Elverum in a two-week tour of Japan in early 2003. After spending five months in isolation in Norway, Elverum emerged with a cache of heart-felt and reflective songs reminiscent of The Glow Part II. Reissue of The Microphones' album, "Window," originally released in 2000. This collection of six songs and seventeen audio recording experiments helped to establish The Microphones' Phil Elvrum as one of indie music's most innovative artists. The album features the playing and/or voices of some of indie's best-known names, including Dennis Driscoll, Mirah, and Calvin Johnson, and was mostly recorded at that hotbed of audio activism, Dub Narcotic Studio.
