The Mountain Goats
The Mountain Goats are one of the more unusual bands to find shelter under the ever-expanding umbrella term of indie rock. Hyper-prolific and militantly lo-fi, there are over a hundred Mountain Goats songs scattered across compilations and label samplers, most of them recorded (by choice) on a department-store boom box. Although many musicians have contributed to Mountain Goats releases, by far the person most identified with the outfit is singer/guitarist John Darnielle. (In fact, many Mountain Goats tracks feature only Darnielle's nasal bleat and his pri...[more]

Following the success of We Shall All Be Healed, The Mountain Goats return with a third record for 4AD. The Sunset Tree was recorded by John Vanderslice at Prairie Sun Studios (a favorite haunt of Tom Waits, among others) in North Carolina. The album features long time collaborator Peter Hughes, along with Franklin Bruno, and acclaimed jazz cellist Eric Friedlander. "Bob Dylan proved that vitriol and acoustic guitars could go together, but the Mountain Goats' John Darnielle has taken confessio [ read more ]

Get Lonely is every bit as assured as its predecessor, The Sunset Tree, but the mood is entirely different. Sunset chronicled the fraught, violent relationship between John Darnielle and his stepfather and derived its power from an unblinking exorcism of personal demons, while Get Lonely is the haunted aftermath. It's a reflective, intimate record. The mood is one of bittersweet resignation rather than cathartic release. It's a quiet triumph, murmuring with a modest but entirely [ read more ]

The Mountain Goats have recorded several fine albums that have established them as a genuine cult phenomenon and confirmed John Darnielle's status as one of the finest lyricists of his generation. "Heretic Pride" is a suite of songs about mythical creatures, imaginary cults, slasher films, and pulp fiction novelists. Here, Darnielle has also come up with some of the most anthemic, impassioned, and downright catchy songs of his career.[ read more ]

Since 1995, the general rule has been for Mountain Goats albums to feature a mixture of home-recorded and studio songs. November of 2002 finds Darnielle and Hughes locked in Tarbox Road Studios in upstate New York with producer Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Belle and Sebastian, Mojave 3, The Delgados) using great big pieces of equipment to conjure paranoid visions of a couple permanently on the cusp of divorce. The characters that populate Tallahassee (referred to by fans as "the Alpha couple," owing to the w [ read more ]

The follow-up release to last year's Tallahassee is the most accessible and commercial record of their notable career. John Darnielle and Peter Hughes joined forces with Franklin Bruno, Christopher McGuire, and Nora Danielson for the ten-day recording session. Recorded at Bear Creek studios in Washington State and produced by John Vanderslice (with whom they spent months on tour this past year).

Solitary singers wielding acoustic guitars are the musical equivalent of a glass of water. It's a means of expression that boasts more than its share of boring, flavorless, transparent hacks, and while there's bound to be the occasional draught of earthy, lukewarm sludge, it's hard to get passionate about disliking all but the most inane troubadour. Every now and then, however, a refreshing wellspring of talent emerges, like a Bob Dylan or a Woody Guthrie. While John Darnielle, aka The Mountain G [ read more ]
