Get Lonely (CD)
Get Lonely is every bit as assured as its predecessor, The Sunset Tree, but the mood is entirely different. Sunset chronicled the fraught, violent relationship between John Darnielle and his stepfather and derived its power from an unblinking exorcism of personal demons, while Get Lonely is the haunted aftermath. It's a reflective, intimate record. The mood is one of bittersweet resignation rather than cathartic release. It's a quiet triumph, murmuring with a modest but entirely surefooted confidence. An uncannily coherent and subtly redemptive record which will come to be seen as Mountain Goats' most resonant, assured, and magical collection of songs so far.![]()

| John Darnielle's latest employs a very atmospheric, coffee-house feel to paint a dark portrait of post-breakup life. While the majority of the album is dark and introspective, several songs are delivered in a breathy, semi-falsetto, lending the record a strange sort of gravity. ''Woke Up New'' is the obvious single here, best demonstrating Get Lonely's style and themes, but the album is packed with intelligent, striking tracks that surprise with their instrumentation - more varied here than on any previous Mountain Goats' record - and authenticity. Standouts include the title track, sounding like a glorious Sea Change outtake, and ''Cobra Tattoo'', packing the biggest lyrical and emotional punch of 2006. | |

| Admittedly, no Mountain Goats fan is in it just for the music. JD has always been first and foremost a lyricist, but as the Mountain Goats evolved the music became more and more the equal of the lyrics. The Sunset Tree was a new high musically for the band. Get Lonely takes a step back musically, relegating it to the background and putting John and his lyrics front and center. GL is a sparse, honest, quiet album, using images and locations to paint the spectre of loneliness, rejection and isolation. It is pretty and sad, but it never really moves beyond that. It therefore feels pretty old by the 30 minute mark, needing just a little more attention to music in order for it to be a masterpiece. Still, very good. | |

| Realtime poetry set to a delicate background of melody. What Pinkerton was to Weezer, Get Lonely is to The Goats atop the loneliest mountain ever. Someone please buy Darnielle a drink next time you see him. Outstanding record. | |

| This is quite possibly the most bleak/depressing album of 2006...and it's all the more wonderful for being so. I purchased this album expecting the weight of Darneille's songs to sink in after several listens, just as it did with The Sunset Tree. This album is much more immediate, and for my money much more devestating for being so. He also steps even further away from the lo-fi approach of his earlier work, but it would be unfair to knock him for this. In fact, the cleaner production only adds to the immediate emotional effect of his music and lyrics. I highly recommend this album...to all. | |
