Unlike most punk acts of the '90s who travel along punk/pop and alternative ways of the rock genre, the Murder City Devils choose to stay in control of their riffs. Keeping a strong presence of simple features of pure rock & roll, the Devils finish up showing clean yet raw compositions, supposedly connecting them to the punk style. The inside fold out sets the mood for this album, as it's packed with gory photos of the band dressed up as murder victims. But without involving any gimmicks, the Murder City Devils just rock out to a gritty, nostalgic garage punk that looks up to the Dead Boys and Alice Cooper. On Thelema, the Murder City Devils render their distinctive brand of hardcore garage punk with confidence and coherence. The ensemble playing is tight and economic as bassist Derek Fudesco and the menacing double-guitar brigade of Nate Manny and Dan Gallucci crank out unison rhythms that are bridged by Lesie Hardy's sustained keyboard textures and drummer Coady Willis' clever use of dynamics. 'Bear Away' and 'Bride of the Elephant Man' are the two most melodic offerings, as each instrumentalist contributes [ read more ]

The Murder City Devils strutted onto the scene with their 1997 eponymous debut, which unleashed straight-ahead punk weighted down with the leg irons of heavy rock. The creepy-crawly organ lends a horror movie mood, and the gravelly growl of Spencer Moody's voice evokes all the despair of finding yourself alone again at last call. Along with layers of sleazy rock guitar, these foundations make the Murder City Devils a raw rock force to be reckoned with; however, on this album the band is [ read more ]
