Empty Bottles, Broken Hearts (CD)
Spencer Moody's hollering vocals may make you want to run and hide, but fans of thick and chunky rock will revel in this silly and entertaining record. Any band that draws its inspiration from such sources as the film Night of the Hunter ("Left Hand Right Hand") and punk legend Johnny Thunders must have something to say. ~ Tim Sheridan, All Music Guide

| I can't seem to understand all of these "silly" and "goofy" remarks. I have seen these guys at least a dozen times and every one of their records are on regular rotation on my stereo and I don't see anything silly about them. These guys are what Rock and Roll should be....no pretentions, just rock. It took a band like this to come along to renew my faith in punk rock...no, in rock and roll in general. They grab you by the throat and refuse to let go until you've lost your mind in whirl of grinding guitars and spooky organ lines. And don't even get me started on the vocals...Maybe you can't understand just how powerful they are until you see them live and see the man they come out of and feel the energy with which he attacks the audience. I would offer comparisons to give you an idea of their sound, but there are no comparisons. Perhaps that is what is so amazing about The Murder City Devils - it is a such a simple concept....pure Rock and Roll....and yet no one has ever done it their way before, and their way is the right way. Empty Bottles is a bit different from their first LP, which is equally amazing in its own unique way, I have to say after much internal deliberation it is my favorite of the two. While it is definitely slicker and lacks the garage edge that their first record had in spades the song writing on this is an enormous step for them. I can't recommend this enough....if you only buy one record ever again it should be this, and never miss the chance to see them live. Rock and Roll. | |

| Indier-than-thou kids may deem bands such as the Murder City Devils as a dumb novelty at best, but this is because they do not know how to rock. You wussies can cling to your precious Neutral Milk Hotel records to your heart's content; when you're ready to rock, you'd best check out "Empty Bottles, Broken Hearts". This record is out-and-out amazing. Yes, it's dumb, but in the best way... they evoke everything that makes rock 'n' roll fun to listen to. | |
