The National
Setting up their tunes on a creative territory amid American electric rock and indie rock's mellowest tunes, the National ultimately present melodious and inspiring compositions also enlightened by a set of influences, including country-rock and even British pop/rock. Originally coming from Ohio, the band eventually formed in New York in the late '90s, with a five-piece lineup, embodied by brothers Scott (guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums), Aaron (bass) and Bryce Dessner (guitar), and by vocalist Matt Berninger. Following a series of live presentati...[more]

These five Cincinnati friends recorded two albums for Brassland before signing to Beggars Banquet. Their last effort, Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers, was touted as one of the year's best by Rolling Stone and other magazines. On Alligator, Matt Berninger's potent baritone still intones about matters fraught, funny, and sad; about record collections, missing persons, and medium-sized American hearts. "Startling and subtly affecting, The National creeps in like the killer in a bleak gothic novel. Str [ read more ]

The second album by The National will give you exactly what the title says, so no letdown there (unlike obviously all the relationships of the people who wrote these songs). Love is a trial, a dangerous bad thing to happen to anyone. The world is dangerous, confusing, and in the end you'll be hurt badly. The National dress these miserable concepts into finely wrought melodies, gloomy arrangements ranging from simple acoustics to bigger band songs complete with female back-vocals and string-sections. Yes, it [ read more ]

The National's new EP, Cherry Tree, features five amazing new songs; a duet between lead singer Matt Berninger & Clogs' Padma Newsome; and a live performance of "Murder Me Rachael" from Bernard Lenoir's Black Session on France Inter Radio. Trust us, these boys are on the brink of something HUGE. "The heart and soul of this EP rest with the voice of Matt Berninger, whose tones make the most contented listener pine for a love they've never lost. The second single to be lifted from this year's superb Boxer LP hits the listener with another distinctive and expertly performed drum line courtesy of Bryan Devendorf. Coupled with the layered U2-like chorus, this is another radio-friendly slice of The National However, it's the B-side that makes this a must-have. Covering a track such as the Boss' 1982 Nebraska classic 'Mansion on the Hill' is not to be taken lightly. However, there are few acts on the current scene better placed to do so than [ read more ]

Taxonomically and musically, The National trumps 'em all. Scott and Bryan Devendorf; Aaron and Bryce Dessner; Matt Berninger. This is The National: two sets of brothers, one tall blonde--five displaced Ohioans living in Brooklyn exile. In spirit, however, they're not far from the heart of it all. Rooted in the electric rock sound of their native Ohio Valley--Guided by Voices, Afghan Whigs, Scrawl, Ass Ponys, Palace Brothers (from across the Kentucky border), Leonard Cohen (okay, he's Canadian), and tens of [ read more ]
