These five Cincinnati friends recorded two albums for Brassland before signing to Beggars Banquet. Their last effort, Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers, was touted as one of the year's best by Rolling Stone and other magazines. On Alligator, Matt Berninger's potent baritone still intones about matters fraught, funny, and sad; about record collections, missing persons, and medium-sized American hearts. "Startling and subtly affecting, The National creeps in like the killer in a bleak gothic novel. Strings tremble, hearts break, and each smoldering song brings a harrowing tale of new pities"--Magnet.

User Reviews

Sean Balanger - Hamilton, OH, USA
Simply put, this is the best CD I've ever listened to. Never have I memorized the lyrics to an entire CD before. Never have I liked every song on an entire CD before (Maybe Nirvana, but that's different). Every song has it's own style. Some are upbeat and some just make you want to cry. Some tell you what life is and some tell you what life should be. Some say love without using the word and some say hate. Companionship, drunkenness, life, death, it's all there. Berninger's voice is deep and raspy, but at the same time it has a smoothness that just soothes. This CD shows us the way music is supposed to be made.
