Producer John Congleton's, Dallas, TX-based band the Paper Chase provided a jagged structure of avant-garde jazz, noise, indie, and punk since their formation in 1998. With comparisons to the likes of Drive Like Jehu and King Crimson, Beatville Records -- primarily known for its ska and reggae releases -- released the Paper Chase's debut album, Young Bodies Heal Quickly, You Know, in 2000. The Ctrl-Alt-Del-U EP on Divot followed in 2001, and the next year the Paper Chase delivered Hide the Kitchen Knives. 2004 was a busy year for th...[more]

On their second full-length release and third overall, Dallas' the Paper Chase (or the pAper chAse, as they like to have it spelled) have quite obviously made their best album to date. This four-piece has gotten through the occasional annoying traits that harried the group on previous outings, working out a series of songs that breathes success. While their first album, Young Bodies Heal Quickly, You Know was unique and creative, it was pestered by the lack of an appreciable structure, knowing that   [ read more ]

The pAper chAse were borne out of Dallas, Texas, the kind of place where the everyday is all that happens. (John) Congleton, singer, guitarist, songwriter, formed the band as a creative outlet aside from his production work. Newly signed to Kill Rock Stars, the pAper chAse pulled out all the stops for their third full-length, "God Bless Your Black Heart." Theatrical and scary, "God Bless..." has an overwhelming theme of darkness and sometimes disturbing imagery. "What the Texas quartet brings to the table i   [ read more ]

Hell, yes -- new material comin' your way from this Texas foursome. This single follows their somewhat disturbing, but absolutely brilliant, "Hide The Kitchen Knives" album (out on Beatville). It showcases three completely arresting and emotionally-charged tracks -- one of which is brand spanking new, the other two unpack the band's eclectic influences and reveal their unique take on the music of Jacques Brel and Roger Waters. "What Big Teeth You Have" also includes a video for "Don't You Wish You Had Some    [ read more ]

On Someday This Could All Be Yours Vol. 1, The Paper Chase sounds even more unlike any other band in modern music. As a band, The Paper Chase has matured but hasn't lightened up, leaving open spaces and allowing melodies to fully develop; the group presents its most powerful work to date. Utilizing a newfound dynamic command with drummer Jason Garner making his recorded debut with the group, these songs are able to breathe - subtly building feelings of anticipation, yet erupting into violence and cha   [ read more ]

The Paper Chase's signature sounds - strangled guitars, bombastic percussion, terror-stricken strings, bizarre samples, and crashing pianos - are firmly in place on this new record. Here, the Dallas quartet creates the sonic equivalent to George A. Romero's classic zombie films, in which one and all inevitably become "one of them". Layers of trepidation are aurally peeled away and scrutinized while a looming unknown lies below the surface. The sound of ghostly forces opening and closing squeaky doors become   [ read more ]

The Paper Chase's debut album Young Bodies Heal Quickly, You Know clearly sets the band apart from other Texas punk bands. Although debts must be paid to the Butthole Surfers and Carbomb, the Paper Chase blends layers of grit, found sounds, samples, and guitar chunk with delicate piano swells and cello melodies to create a far artier and jarring overall work. Chief song architect John Congleton constructs abrasive but beautiful compositions that overlap one another punctuated by his emo   [ read more ]
