Now You Are One Of Us (MP3)
The Paper Chase's signature sounds - strangled guitars, bombastic percussion, terror-stricken strings, bizarre samples, and crashing pianos - are firmly in place on this new record. Here, the Dallas quartet creates the sonic equivalent to George A. Romero's classic zombie films, in which one and all inevitably become "one of them". Layers of trepidation are aurally peeled away and scrutinized while a looming unknown lies below the surface. The sound of ghostly forces opening and closing squeaky doors becomes eerily significant, and songwriter/singer/producer John Congleton's trademark desperation is at its most crucial.

| The pAper Chase don't do well to be labeled. Blade-sharp guitars rise out of detuned piano melodies, slicing zig-zags through John Congleton's compositions. Off-key free jazz sax squeals are as likely to appear as horror movie samples; a string section is employed at various moments to add seething intensity to the discord. The lyrics of past albums have covered such topics as debilitating accidents, reconciliation, man's reliance on technology, gang-bang infidelity, the choice between regret or revenge, security, and sadomasochism. Ok, maybe The pAper Chase don't do well to be described, either. The repetition of themes is a constant among The pAper Chase, with albums often regurgitating arrangements and lyrics in various reconfigurations before closing. Now You Are One Of Us claims its own territory, but also features call-back chord progressions and melodies that have appeared earlier in the band's catalogue. The underlying motifs of Now You Are One Of Us? Paranoia and the loss of self, with the haunting and becoming of a ghost as the big metaphor. It's not normal by a good distance, and Congleton's writing and delivery have been attributed by some to a supposed diagnosis as a schizophrenic/manic depressive. While it might make sense, it doesn't explain the fact that the man's an absolute studio genius. | |
