The Sea and Cake
The Sea and Cake is a post-rock supergroup of sorts comprised of luminaries from the Chicago independent scene. The band is led by singer/guitarist Sam Prekop, who, along with bassist Eric Claridge, was an alumnus of the frequently brilliant Shrimp Boat. After that group's dissolution, Prekop and Claridge were offered the opportunity to embark on a new project and hastily recruited ex-Coctails guitarist Archer Prewitt and Tortoise drummer John McEntire before entering the studio. Originally intended as a one-off project, the musicians decided to cont...[more]

The Sea and Cake's buoyant debut is a breath of fresh air, an utterly distinctive and innovative work which expands the scope of frontman Sam Prekop's work in the great Shrimp Boat to incorporate a new fascination with Afro-Caribbean rhythms and textures. Recorded by Brad Wood, the album simply glows ? Prekop's dry vocals and free-associative lyrics skip along a shimmering and lushly pastoral backdrop which nimbly fuses pop, soul, jazz and even prog rock; tracks like "Jacking the Ball," "Flat Lay the Water, [ read more ]

In the three-plus years following the release of 1997's The Fawn, the Sea and Cake's ever-busy membership dabbled in solo albums, touring with side projects, and various other responsibilities that come with the territory in the Chicago indie rock scene. But as effortlessly as an April breeze, the quartet reconvened to turn in Oui, quite possibly the finest of the group's five albums to date. Oui brightens up the electroacoustic hybrids first heard on The Fawn with guidance from frontman {$Sa [ read more ]

The product of an uncharacteristically long two-year layoff, The Fawn is the Sea and Cake's most experimental effort to date; the influence which the electronica movement exerts over the record is substantial -- drum machines, sequencer tones, and synths are dominant throughout, and the group even dabbles in dub textures and sampling techniques. What's remarkable about songs like "Sporting Life" and "The Argument," however, is that the addition of electronics never upsets the music's delicate ch [ read more ]

Recorded by John McEntire at Idful Studios in Chicago, "Nassau" moves the band away from the more immediate pop leanings of their self-titled debut and sees them begin to experiment as a band in production and songwriting. "Nassau" was featured on many 1995 year-end lists, moving the band into the spotlight and out of the shadows. "Nassau" lives up to the promise of their debut and raised the bar for things to come.

The album, the group's third in just over a year, bears direct sonic connections with the members' previous or concurrent projects. Guitarist and singer Sam Prekop previously led Shrimp Boat; keyboardist and guitarist Archer Prewitt was a member of The Coctails; drummer and producer John McEntire was a member of both Gastr del Sol and Tortoise.
