Brand new material from Silver Jews, Tanglewood Numbers is their first album in 4 years. Oh Yeah did we mention Malkmus is back? "The Silver Jews sound bigger. Not just because Tanglewood Numbers incorporates some Nashvillian arrangements, or because Dave Berman actually attempts a vocal range, but rather because this latest album is something fuller and more consistent than even the Jews' 1998 near-masterpiece American Water. Even as an unapologetic anti-metallite, I still can't escape the call of this band's silvery gleam. Still pleasant, still clever, still all the good-great pop action David Berman and Stephen Malkmus can dream up o'er the course of an album's time. Twelve chuckle-along songs hitting red on your geekest hip-o-meter.

David Berman and Stephen Malkmus, the principal Silver Jews, met at the University of Virginia in the late '80s, around the same time Malkmus was flying home to California on vacations and starting Pavement. The Silver Jews' first two EPs shared Pavement's noise-straddled, lo-fi aesthetic; on them, the Jews sounded like a scaled-back, literary Pavement. (Pavement, in turn, took on the Silver Jews' sense of lyrical exploration, and has continued traveling down that road deep into its career.) STARLITE WALKER [ read more ]

In 2006, after five albums and fifteen years, David Berman finally decided to take The Silver Jews out on the road. The band toured across America and Europe, all the way to Israel, playing their first forty shows to a widespread outpouring of joy. Silver Jew is a simple document of one of those stops, whereupon the band played two shows in Tel Aviv, and spent a profound afternoon in Jerusalem.
